I've got all sorts of problems here and would really appreciate some help please...

On Sunday I decided to have a bit of a clear up on the PC (win 98) - deletion of temp files, running adaware, norton a/v etc. A couple of programmes deteced problems and managed to sort them out - all were done without a restart. After I restarted I'm having a lot of problems and I can't now locate what it actually is that's causing them.
I ran winoptimizer 2000 which is just a free prog I think - really shouldn't have, but there's an option to remove redundant .dll files which I did - that could be the problem?

My problems now are, on bootup, just before it gets to my desktop I get a dos type screen up saying "NAV Auto-protect, something about not being able to find location of configuration files." Only option is to hit OK and I now get windows with no screen options etc - looks like I'm in safe mode or something? Programmes seem to run OK (apart from f*****g win-optimizer) but the screen is a duffer.

In my quest I've tried to re-install win98, but it comes up with a SUWIN error every time and says there is a problem with dibeng.dll, then sometimes blue screens with a krnl386 error. I don't know what's going on.

Have now seen that I've got a little something I shouldn't have, and it won't go away SEARCH ASSISTANT - MY SEARCH. I've run HIJACK THIS so if anyone can help I'd really appreciate it.

You're playing with fire when you start deleting DLL files because programs won't run without them. :(

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

I would suggest restarting in DOS mode and typing in SCANREG /RESTORE at the command prompt and restoring to a registry copy with a date previous to when the problem occurred(but not the oldest copy), but I don't know if your attempt to reinstall Windows would allow it to work properly.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

Your computer has an about:blank problem that needs dealing with. Let's see if someone else jumps in and gives you some additional advice and better help.

Playing with fire is an understatement - believe me, I'm not suffuciently scorched...

Thanks for the tip on the registry - I will try that tonight. I hope that Windows did not get far enough through a re-install to affect it.

Any help on the hijackthis log would be much appreciated please.

Do the SCANREG /RESTORE first. It's a waste of time to work on the log first because the restore process will revert it back to the registry copy date that you restore to.

Thank you very much for the help, this has put me on the right track. I'm having a few teething problems with windows back up and running now but think I can sort them. Please could someone have a look down this new hijackthis file and let me know how to proceed. Much appreciated.

The first thing that you should do is create a folder for hijackthis. Ift needs to be in a folder so that backups are available if needed.

Hello, the restore seemed to go OK. I've got problems with NAV now and I don't really know why. It doesn't currently want to run :-(
Have set up a folder for the hijack this files now...

There is one more to check and fix. This hjt log was ran from the desktop. Please run it from the folder that you made so the backups are kept there. That should be all you need to do.

If you did not put these into the trusted zone select them too.

Hmm, problems now. I've done everything with hijackthis and all seems to be OK.

Basically, when I went back to the earlier registry as per earlier in this thread I re-booted and seemingly got back into windows OK, but I got a message saying that norton antivirus now wouldn't work and I need a re-install. I don't know why this came up bause I hadn't changed anything on NAV.
While booted up I did the above hijackthis changes etc, have now rebooted and gone back to my original problem. Just before I get to the desktop I get a blue window come up "NAV Auto-protect" " Unable to determine the location of the configuration files". Bummer. Only option is to hit OK and I get a 'safe mode' type screen.

If you have the norton disk, put it in and do a reinstall. When it asks about removing previous copy say yes. The safe mode screen option is appearing because of the problem with Norton.

If you do not have a disk for Norton removing the following should get you back into windows normally. It is very important that you have an anti-virus program running. You can down load a free one from the link below if you don't have one.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Norton Auto-Protect] C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\NAVAPW32.EXE /LOADQUIET
