I have a friend that receives the following error when backing up:

"The file size has reached the max size allowed by the file system"

File size is approximately 9 gb and stalls/hangs at 5 gb.

He's using Win98se, fat 32 and hdd size is 40 gb; he sees 20 gb as free.

Similar results with veratas backup, and the Microsoft backup.

Suggestions? I'm thinking it's a cacheing issue but could use some professional help! :)

    Sincerely,

    G

Not sure if this applies but the maximum file size on a FAT32 system is 4GB. Could that be what your friend is experiencing?
NTFS does not have those limitations.

    He says he's been successful with 16.6 gb's on fat32. I haven't touched win98 for a bit but I'll ask.

I thought that was specific to fat 16? I wonder how he's been successful with other backup on win98se in excess of 5 gb. Checking...

Thanks Davey, not sure exactly what he'll be doing but I'll post or message you when I find out some more detail.
