I run Windows Backup to a 1tb external drive. It works seamlessly, and I have restored it many times with success.

I would like to copy my windows backup to a second external and keep it in another place, to protect against hardware failure. Unfortunately the typical copy/paste does not work, so I'm thinking on a hdd cloner.

???

You should be able to select make a system image from windows backup
and image the drive to the new drive.

If a hard drive fails, windows backup can have problems with a new one.
Might check this,it's free.

How is that going to keep the data any more secure or safe if the data on that drive is still in your house? I would look at something like Acronis Online Backup. It is only $5 a month for 250GB of data...can't beat that with a stick.

I don't like the idea of getting into third party software. I've used Windows backup with great success - I can just pop in the install disk, connect my backup drive and it installs my OS verbatim to how it was. Even though other softwares may do this, I have no experience with them, and on top of that no other software will clone a C:\ drive in the OS except for windows. If it ain't broken, don't fix it.

Anyways-

Is there a good utility for cloning (I mean byte-for-byte verbatim cloning) two external hard drives in windows?

I looked into this, along with many cloud services, and it's simply not for me. I'm dealing with mountains of sensitive data, both of which pose a problem when you're talking about Internet backup. I hope Microsoft releases a nice backup utility soon in Update (doubt it), or get their act together and incorporate it in Windows v8. Features like backing up to multiple drives, multiple backups would be a one stop solution. Then I could back up to externals, internal RAIDS, FTP servers... you name it. Norton 360 already has this, only thing is Windows Backup is the only software that seamlessly backs up the OS in the background, effectively cloning your computer. Come on, MS!
