Okay, a second machine that I'm working on... When trying to access User Accounts in Control Panel, I can't get in and get the message "Windows cannot open User Accounts control panel." I can access everything else there—System, Display, etc., just not User Accounts. Anyone have a clue to this one? Thanks!
RTG (need a smiley for "freezing"...brrrr!!! It's cold here!)

Just jumping to the front page hoping someone can help me with this one. It's the only thing (that I know of...) that's keeping this machine on my bench. Thanks!

Thought I might have some luck starting in safe mode and entering as "Administrator" but no change—still can't get in. :(

drumster—Yes. Went into Windows in safe mode selecting THE Administrator as user.
inetbogey—can get into device manager, etc. that way but can find no link to User Accounts.

Drumster—no such item on this machine to select. Only three main categories to choose from: System Tools, Storage and Services, and Applications. Looked through every subdirectory and no luck in finding this item. Just in case it might help, I ran a HiJackThis log of the machine to include with this response. Maybe it'll give somebody an answer or at least a clue as to what changes have been made and what I need to do from here. Here it is:

Great. Am I going to have to do a system restore or repair to fix this problem then?

Discovering addition problems with this machine, whether related or not...? I thought of doing a repair and tried to open Help and Support Center from My Computer and it just aborts. It doesn't try to find and load it or anything; it just acts as if no command was given at all. Obviously, some elements of the OS have been changed and, apparently, the person who made those changes wanted to make sure that no one else changed them back. Any other ideas out there before I put this one in the "fix-it-later-if-I-can" group?

One last "bump" to the front page... Going to lunch in a few. Hoping for a response when I get back or this baby's going to the "the pile". Thanks to all as always!

Why not just reinstall it? That'll clear out any customizations someone may have made.

DH—I work on purchased machines for a pawn shop. Rarely does the former owner include the disk (if they even had it in the first place) for reinstallation. I pretty much (for the moment, anyway) have to work with what came on the computer. I believe we are going to obtain an OEM version of XPHE, perhaps Professional as well, so that I can do what I've always wanted to do: Wipe out the harddrive on every machine that comes in, reformat and partition, and reinstall Windows. It would be ideal to be able to put a "fresh" machine on the floor. As it is, though, they rarely stay on the shelf for more than 3 or 4 days. And stay sold. For now, though, I gotta fix what's there. And this one, I believe, is going to the "fix-it-later" shelf.
