I was running a program that has run prior to Service Pack 3 updates and it lost Root7/system32/hal.dll which will not allow Windows XP Pro boot. How can I fix it? I have tried to use the XP reinstall disk to do a repair but that did not work and to reinstall Windows, I will lose to much valuble information.

    Thanks

Have you been able to boot into 'safe mode', by tapping F8 as the OS loads, and do a system restore back to before this happened?

Yes I have and it will not go back, it comes up wit the same error message as before <Windows Root>/system32/hal.dll. and ask to reinstall the file.

    Thank you for your reply

Can you get into safe mode and uninstall SP3?
