On Monday 13th September 2021 a blue box appeared on the screen. It said something about updates not happening until Windows is updated. There were three boxes at the bottom. Very stupidly I clicked on the box saying Learn More.

Windows Defender has tried to remove some threats. They may be associated with trojan Sabsik.TE.a!ml . I have used Defender scan quick, full, and offline, about three times each.

A couple of LEDs, power in and brightness?? , have stopped working and the mouse does not work in 2 out of 3 usb sockets. That last sentence was written yesterday. I switched the notebook Acer aspire one on this morning and all four lights were working. I used one of the 'defective' usb sockets for a flash drive to get the two text files you want. I am in the public library.

Hello Arthur Penney and welcome to TSG,

Upload a File to Virustotal

Go to http://www.virustotal.com/

  • Click the Choose file button
  • Navigate to the file C:\Program Files\GUTD716.tmp
  • Click the Scan it tab
  • If you get a message saying File has already been analyzed: click Reanalyze file now
  • Copy and paste the URL address back here please.
  • Repeat the above steps for the following file

C:\Program Files\HFODU2.jar

Next,

If you do not have Malwarebytes installed do the following:

Download Malwarebytes version 4 from the following link:

https://www.malwarebytes.com/mwb-download/thankyou/

Double click on the installer and follow the prompts.

When the install completes or Malwarebytes is already installed do the following:

Open Malwarebytes, select > small cog wheel top right hand corner, that will open "settings" from there select "Security" tab.

Scroll down to "Scan Options" ensure Scan for Rootkits and Scan within Archives are both on....

Close out the settings window, this will take you back to "DashBoard" select the Blue "Scan Now" tab......

When the scan completes quarantine any found entries...

To get the log from Malwarebytes do the following:

  • Open Malwarebytes
  • Click on the Detection History tab > from main interface.
  • Then click on "History" that will open to a historical list
  • Double click on the Scan log which shows the Date and time of the scan just performed.
  • Click Export > From export you have two options:

Copy to Clipboard - if seleted right click to your reply and select "Paste" log will be pasted to your reply
Text file (*.txt) - if selected you will have to name the file and save to a place of choice, recommend "Desktop" then attach to reply

  • Please use "Text file (*.txt), then name the file and save to a place of choice, recommend "Desktop" then attach to reply

Next,

Download AdwCleaner by Malwarebytes onto your Desktop.

Or from this Mirror

  • Right-click on AdwCleaner.exe and select
Run as Administrator (for Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 and 10 users)
  • Accept the EULA (I accept), then click on Scan
  • Let the scan complete. Once it's done, make sure that every item listed in the different tabs is checked and click on the Quarantine button. This will kill all the active processes
  • Once the cleaning process is complete, AdwCleaner will ask to restart your computer, do it
  • After the restart, a log will open when logging in. Please copy/paste the content of that log in your next reply

Let me see those logs in your reply...

Thank you,

Kevin

Kevin,

I am a bit worried. I have done the first section of your message, virustotal.

I have obtained the Malwarebytes and run the scan as requested, although the display seemed a bit too big for the screen and the word scan was only half visible.

I am worried because the quarantine process has been running for an hour. Am I just being impatient or is it unable to complete? As far as I can tell from the faint writing, it is dealing with
PUPoptassist potentially…ted program. Registry Key HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROS…RIVERASSIST_RASAPPI32

and the second is similar ending RASMANCS

Kevin,

I had realised from looking at other posts in this section the necessity of following instructions exactly, no more, no less. I fully intended to do that. I apologise that at supper time I panicked and put the lid down into hibernate. So it has only had an extra 20 minutes or so.

No change. the semicircle still rotates, the image dimmed, 0 out of 2 threats quarantined.

Your enquiry as to progress suggests that I could leave the machine switched on overnight. It will be bedtime 60-90 minutes from now. I will check again then.

I enclose the two URL's from virustotal.

Thank you for your efforts so far.

neighbour called round wanting help with her tax form, left in a hurry telling me I had been no help, not fair. I found both Malwarebytes and the Adware difficult to use, they didn't seem to fit the screen, or was it that they have been modified and need different instructions.

Also, i am sorry to report that I restarted the computer from hibernate overnight at 7am, with Malwarebytes still trying to quarantine 2 items, but when I looked at it when starting breakfast, the computer had shut down. I don't know why. I restarted Malwarebytes to scan, this time it found 4 items and quarantined quickly. I just hope that I did the right thing.

Kevin,

There is not anything obviously wrong. I have been using it a little. The Windows Defender says that Malwarebytes is turned on and underneath that it says current threats no action needed. If that means that you are satisfied then I can’t thank you enough. I apologise for rambling about tax in the previous message. I really did find aspects of using the programs stressful, and the tax thing didn’t help.

One final scan please:

Download "Microsoft's Safety Scanner" and save direct to the desktop

Ensure to get the correct version for your system....

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/wi...otection/intelligence/safety-scanner-download

Right click on the Tool, select Run as Administrator the tool will expand to the options Window
In the "Scan Type" window, select Quick Scan
Perform a scan and Click Finish when the scan is done.

Retrieve the MSRT log as follows, and post it in your next reply:

1) Select the Windows key and R key together to open the "Run" function
2) Type or Copy/Paste the following command to the "Run Line" and Press Enter:

notepad c:\windows\debug\msert.log

The log will include log details for each time MSRT has run, we only need the most recent log by date and time....

Let me see that log in your reply...

Kevin,
There does not seem to anything wrong. I have been a bit slow replying because I have been wondering what to say. I have looked at the advice in the other fixed posting, and I am sure that there are things to alter. I suppose there are things on the desktop that are no longer wanted. The really big bother is that I was think of subscribing to the Malwarebytes Premium, but now I am unsure. I see that it has switched off Windows Defender. From what I have been reading, Defender is considered to be rather good nowadays.

A consideration is that I have an iPad, which is the primary device. I also like to use the public library. When the notebook that we have been dealing with is used, it is mostly used offline.

Any security application you install will turn off Windows Defender, including Malwarebytes. After you install Malwarebytes reboot your PC.
Open Malwarebytes select "Settings" small cog wheel top right hand corner, then select "Security" tab. Scroll to "Windows security Center" pull slider fully to left. That will turn on Windows Defender. You may need to reboot. Malwarebytes and Windows Defender will then work ok together....

Kevin,

Bad news. Today I followed your previous post and have just done a full scan with Windows Defender. It has quarantined something called bladabindi, a back door . I also deleted Java runtime environment, as suggest in the advice fixed posting.
