windows defender

    upon startup I get a message that windows defender was unable to start. What is Windows defender

    A new version just came out a couple of weeks ago-

    From the MS site linked above: ""Note: If you have version 1.1.1592.0, you must first manually uninstall Windows Defender before you can install this newer version. To configure or remove the existing version, use Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel. ""

    I am not sure if when you go to download whether it will let
    you just save the install on the hard drive to do later, or whether
    it the type that will want to install online.

    Also, I understand that the ancestry goes back to "Giant Anti-Spyware," which enjoyed a very good reputation. MS may have "tweaked" the original when they bought the software and reoffered it as their own.

    "Giant" is still in business, and I thi nk the original software can still be found if you search forit. Updates I know nothing about.
