    Hey,

I have this windows xp problem with my taskbar. Whenever I log off, or turn off the computer and log back on, the search assistant and the quick launch pop up automatically as well as the My Documents window. I don't know how to get it to stop. I have gone to properties on the task bar and made sure the quick launch was not selected but the problem persists.

    Can someone please help?

    Adam

click on start run type msconfig uncheck everything on the startup tab and reboot then check if the problem is gone if yes then check one program at the time on the startup tab then you will find the program that is causing the problem

or it can be virus or spyware check for those as well

You have evidence of a search Hijack, but before we proceed, please post a Scanlog using the latest version which I gave a link to.

    Also follow these directions:

First download and run : (http://downloads.subratam.org/FINDnFIX.exe)

It will extract a set of files to c:\FindnFix

Run the !log!.bat in the FindnFix folder and post the log.txt file it creates to a reply

So in your next post, include both the log.txt and the version 1.98.2 HijackThis logs.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong Rog, but it seems like he saved the hjt log to his desktop, instead of the better location in either Program Files, or My Documents.

ok...errr, again, maybe the temp folder is also where you don't want to put the hjt log. Needs a permanent location...and as natcom says in its own folder, ie, My Documents/ HJT

While it's ok to have HijackThis on the desktop (it will create a "backups" folder there), to keep your desktop from being cluttered, it's better to have it in its own folder in My Documents.

No problems detected in the findnfix log -- so follow these directions:

[IMG] Have these instructions printed or in a convenient Notepad (or Wordpad) file so you can view them in Safe Mode. Have "show hidden (or all) files" checked in Folder Options > View in case you have to search for any hidden files to delete. Also ensure you do NOT have "hide file extensions..." enabled in Folder Options > View

Download and unzip to a convenient location the CoolWebShredder, CWShredder.exe available here: http://www.computercops.biz/downloads-cat-14.html

    Then:

    1 >> Restart in Safe Mode: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406

2 >> In Safe Mode run the CoolWebShredder and have it "fix" detected problems. Then run HijackThis and check and "fix" the following entries:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = file://C:\DOCUME~1\ADAMTH~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = file://C:\DOCUME~1\ADAMTH~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank

    F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,C:\Windows\System32\wsaupdater.ex e,

    ^^^ find and delete wsauptater.ex e,

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WindUpdates] C:\Program Files\WindUpdates\WinUpdt.exe

    ^^ delete the WindUpdates folder

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows SA] C:\Program Files\WindowsSA\omniscient.exe

    ^^ delete the WindowsSA folder

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WebRebates0] "C:\Program Files\Web_Rebates\WebRebates0.exe"

    ^^ delete the Web_Rebates folder

    O18 - Filter: text/plain - {AC0D6FA9-5C18-458B-98DC-F5273EE5F858} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\cbkdln.dll

Additional cleanup instructions: Go to the Control Panel > Internet Options applet. Clear the Temporary Internet Cache, History and Offline Content. Go to the Programs tab and select "reset web settings", including your home page if it has been altered. You can reset that later to what you desire.

Go to Start > Run, enter %temp% and then click Edit > Select All. Right click on the selected files and folders and delete them

When you reboot, I would also recommend installing Ad-Aware SE and the VX2 Plugin and doing a full drive scan.

When finished post a new HijackThis scanlog.

    Ad-Aware Home Page

    http://download.lavasoft.de.edgesuite.net/public/plvx2cleaner.exe
The VX2 plugin will be available in the "add-ons" window once installed and is run from there.

Alright, after rebooting I scanned with hijackthis (which I moved to my documents) and then found that the windowsupdate and a couple of others that I had deleted popped up again so I fixed and rebooted and they are fixed. Here is the last hijackthislog.

It doesn't look like they are staying deleted:

    C:\Program Files\WindUpdates\WinUpdt.exe
    C:\Program Files\WindUpdates\WinKA.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WindUpdates] C:\Program Files\WindUpdates\WinUpdt.exe

Are you getting any error message when deleting the folder?

    Disconnect from the net.
Also if you are on a broadband modem, disconnect the modem completely. Then terminate the processes winka.exe and winupdt.exe before shutting down completely (wait about 20 seconds to restart), then restart in Safe Mode. Make sure you do not choose Safe Mode with networking support.

Try again and see if they stay deleted. If not we need to have some more looks at what is starting.

Here is a special file/process viewer:

    http://tools.zerosrealm.com/pv.zip

    Unzip it and run "runme.bat"

You will be presented with a DOS window with numbered options. I'd like to see the results of 1 , 2 and 3, for IE and Explorer and rundll32. These will be produced in text files you can upload as attachments. If the rundll32 text is blank, no need to upload.

Also, unzip and run "getservice.bat" and upload the text from that as an attachment:

    http://forums.techguy.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=38367

One more thing to note: this trojan spreads through shared network files. If the computer is networked, disconnect it and clean all systems independently.

    http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/w32rbotfp.html

One more note: Unhide "System Files" temporarily in Folder options > View and search for winupdt.exe throughout the Windows directory, especially the system32 folder. It may be hidden as a "system" file.
