I am running Windows ME with a Pentium 4 CPU. When I try to shutdown or restart, I sometimes get this blue screen message: "An exception at OE has occurred at 0028:F000F841 in VxD ---. This was called from 0028:C001D324 in VxD NDIS(01) + 00005AA0." I can't properly shutdown so I have to manually cut off the power frequently. Also, every now and again, the sound would stop working, but restarting the computer would rectify the problem. Now there is no sound coming out of the speakers at all. All the cords are connected properly, and I can't seem to figure out what the problem is. Here are my startup programs:

mls1282,

I would right click my computer, preformance and check system recources.
Then check out:
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.htm
and then go to start run/type msconfig/ok/starup and edit start up by unchecking unnessacary programs in link above, restart when prompted at, restart you will see, selective startup,
check don't show me this again.
I would print startup list you posted and use it as reference.

OK, I followed those directions, and when I tried to restart, I got the same blue screen message. Do I have to exit out of all programs before I try to restart? Also, my sound still is not working...

Hi mls,you also have a spyware componnet called Gator.Did you remove that from your startup programs.Go to this site and download a free program called Ad-aware5.6.

http://www.lavasoftusa.net

After you download that program also download the lastest singnture file, and unpack into the ad-aware program. Now run the program, make sure all the boxs on the left are check. If it finds any, check them all and delete them.

Might also be a good idea to empty all your temp folders.Since you disabled some of your startup programs, lets have a look at what you have running now.

As for your sound problem,Right click on My Computer,>properties>device manager>do you see any yellow (!),next to anything? If not go to Start>settings>control panel>multimedia>click on the playback icon>make sure theres nothing muted except mic>and the sliders are up.

This fatal exception is sometimes associated with ZoneAlarm.

Much as I'm hesitant to advise you to disable your firewall, this may be the only way you could determine whether that's the culprit.

Select 'Configure' from the main ZoneAlarm window, then deselect the 'Load ZoneAlarm at Startup' check box, and reboot.

See whether the error disappears.

Good luck,

It's better to disable it in the options of ZA as I described.

I disabled ZA but the blue screen still appeared. However my sound has mysteriously come back(it has done this in the past...it would go off and then come back on...all the cords were plugged in correctly). I still can't properly shutdown most of the time...any more suggestions??

Glad to hear the sound is back.It could have something to do with one of the programs you disabled in msconfig.See if that link Tony posted helps with the problem.
