First of all, I think this forum is a stroke of genius. Bravo.

Alright, now on to my problem.

Internet Explorer 6 is what I'm currently using. Since... around the end of August, it's been doing something a little... strange. For example, when I'm writing an email using the AOL website (not the actual AOL program), in the email there's a little button you click on to attach a file. Usually a mini-box without an address bar would pop up and I could click on the files I want to attach in there. However, no mini-boxes have been popping up. This happens, also, if I'm at www.hbo.com and I want to watch a little video. I click on the menu bar in the webpage, select the video, and then click on the link on the webpage that selects the player - yet no player pops up in another window. I think the thing is that there are no popups, and I don't want the ad kind of popup, but this kind of popup is pretty important to things functioning as they're supposed to.

I hope to goodness you all can help. Thank you so much for your time!

Alright. This problem HAD gone away earlier, but it's back, and I have no clue how to fix it.

When I boot up the computer and get to my desktop (this is on a Windows XP system for a Dell computer), the following messages appear:

    Error loading C:/PROGRA~1\NEWDOT~1\NEWDOT~1.DLL

    and

    Windows cannot find 'server2.exe'

I was wondering what I could do to make those go away?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

    http://www.pestpatrol.com/pestinfo/m/mantis__shaban_.asp
    http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/backdoor.khaos.html
Quick search on that file yielded these warnings.
Looks like a partial fix did not quite stop the process from firing up but is at least failing to launch the dirty little package. I would run a good antivirus and not run any restore points, might want to turn that off until you are sure you are clean.
Next, the usual protections I use are AVG(www.grisoft.com) updated daily, Spybot(download.com I think - check on Google) and Zone Alarm (www.zonelabs.com). Good luck and hope it helps. If that does not then you may need to run hijackthis and get some expert analysis.

you may find that removing newdot net ( i assume from the error thats its removed - hence why it giving error) may lose internet connection.

to fix that issue download lpsfix http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

also if you post a hijackthis log - then a secruity guru can clean up your PC - however, do you have any P2P files like kazaa to copy music - if so you will alsoo be requested to remove them (they give you loads of spyware and also its illegal to copy copyrighted info - so the forum will not support)

    post a hjt log

    HIJACK THIS:
Download and copy hijackthis to its own folder , it makes backups so keeping them separate and available can be useful.

Note the Spyware tools websites are very often under attack and so I have provided more than 1 location to download from:

    http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/
    http://209.133.47.200/~merijn/downloads.html
    http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html
    http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe
    http://www.thewhities.com/
http://www.sherrylynn.us/privacypolicy (this has an older version 1.97 - if you can not get to any of the above sites)

Close all open windows and open Hijack This. Click “Scan”. When the scan is finished (it only takes a second), the scan button will change to “Save Log”.
Click on “Save Log” and then save it to NotePad.
Click on “Edit” – “Select all” – “copy” and then “paste” into the thread.
DO NOT FIX ANYTHING wait advice from one of the many security experts in this forum.

I currently do not have the skill/competence to advise and poor advice can be far more damaging to your PC with this software, and so I will be unable to add any advice on the log and so will nolonger be replying to your post with regards to the HJT issue, so please have patience and wait for one of the secruity experts to provide further detailed advice

i will however, be notified when you post the log

    Hi - Welcome to TSG!!

I've merged both of your threads as I believe these problems are related.

Go here and follow procedure 4 to remove new.net.

    http://www.newdotnet.com/removal.html

Reboot and Make a folder on your hard drive, like My Documents\HJT
    Download Hijackthis.
Unzip the file to the folder on your hard drive.

Double click on Hijackthis.exe then click on the "Scan" button, then click on "Save Log".

Copy and paste it back here and someone will be happy to review it.

Don't make any changes until instructed to do so.

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

    Restart in Safe Mode

Open Windows Explorer. Go to Tools, Folder Options and click on the View tab.
Make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked.
Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files".
Now click "Apply to all folders", Click "Apply" then "OK"

    Delete this folder:
    C:\Program Files\Common files\updmgr

    Delete this file:
    MSConfig45.exe

    Reboot.

Go to Windows update site and get all of the critical updates.

    After that post another log.

Alright, because I am too stupid to click on links propery I... um... forgot to restart in Safe Mode. So that was error #1 that I did. Secondly, I was unable to delete C:\Program files\Common files because it said it "cannot delete ascd.exe Access is denied". Also... I'm assuming that after the computer is fixed, I'll be allowed to rehide the translucent icons?

I went through the deleting of MSConfig.exe (it was MSConfig.EX) and rebooted and updated windows and all of that; I just didn't delete the common files folder, so I skipped that step.

I apologize if I'm making this hard on you all.

Run HJT again and put a check in the following:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [updmgr] C:\Program Files\Common files\updmgr\updmgr.exe

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

I didn't want you to delete the entire Common Files folder just this one
    C:\Program Files\Common files\updmgr

Oh, dear, I'm so sorry I read it incorrectly.

I clicked "fix checked" for this:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [updmgr] C:\Program Files\Common files\updmgr\updmgr.exe

    and deleted this folder:

    C:\Program Files\Common files\updmgr

This is my current HJT log:

I hate to say this, but unfortunately, no. Should I try to redownload Internet Explorer or something?
