windows explorer freezing

    When I am in windows explorer and I click on anything my computer freezes. It can be any where from a few seconds to a few minutes. It doesn't happen at any particular time or doing anything specific. I do have this problem elsewhere but the biggest issue is when I am in windows explorer. I have windows 2000 professional service pack 4. I have run spyware progs but I can find nothing. Please advise. Thank you.

    This problem is usually too many (or too resource demanding) background processes. What happens is that you ask explorer to do something, it gets added to the list of requirements demanded of the system, and either memory or CPU is overtaxed. The system has too much to do, has no judgement to choose, tries to do everything at once and locks up. Use the tools below to get a handle on the processes and Services that start with windows and run in the background. Of course, malware can never be assumed to be absent. Make sure that you are not hosting anything. The security section offers lots of self help guides. Here's a bunch of goodies:
