Sorry if I sound stupid but i'm a complete novice...
I have Windows Vista Basic on Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop and the problem is that my Windows Explorer has stopped working properly. After copy-pasting/cut-pasting, the dialog box of pasting doesn't close. When I create a new folder, I can't change the name till I close the explorer via task manager and then come back. After deleting items, the recycle bin dialog box doesn't close.
The search feature has practically stopped working entirely. I heard this is quite common, so after much reading one of my friends told me it's because I don't update my Vista when the pop-up comes. So I tried updating it as well... but the Pack always stops in the middle and stops responding... it never completes the updation. One night I even kept the laptop on for like 9 hours so that it could update. Didn't move on beyond this one point.
    What can I do?
Thanks in advance, especially to those which are easy to understand.

Try a system Restore. When did this error occur? Choose a check point date prior. Also first run in safe mode as administrator and see if the problem exists as admin.
