I'm running Windows XP Home and recently my pc has slowed right down. It keeps making noises like it's processing something, even when I have no programs open. I've tried running some anti-spyware and adware programs to make sure it's nothing like that clogging up my system but this hasn't made any difference. If anyone can give me any advice, or things I should try looking at or doing, I'd appreciate it. Thanks

I see the culprit, but run this tool first:

Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite: http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

· Install Ewido.
· During the installation, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
· Launch Ewido.
· It will prompt you to update click the OK button and it will go to the main screen.
· On the left side of the main screen click Update.
· Click on Start and let it update.
· DO NOT run a scan yet. You will do that later in Safe Mode.

Restart your computer into Safe Mode now.
(start tapping the F8 key at Startup, before the Windows logo screen)
Perform the following steps in Safe Mode:

Run Ewido:

· Click on scanner.
· Put a check by the following before you scan:

o Binder
o Crypter
o Archives

· Click the Start Scan button to start the scan.
· During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK.
· When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save Report button.
· Save the report to your desktop.
· Post that log.

Also post a fresh Hijack This log.

Phew! Finally done, but seems to have done the trick as things seem to be moving more smoothly and Ewido found quite a few things. The log is below. Thanks a lot for the help - really appreciate it.

You forgot to post the log from Ewido ;)

With IE closed, run Hijack This again.
Put a checkmark on these entries and hit "fix checked":

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://www.zpecialoffer.com/results.asp?keyword=%s

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [start extracting] spoolvse.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\RunServices: [start extracting] spoolvse.exe

Boot into Safe Mode (start tapping the F8 key at Startup, before the Windows logo screen)

Because XP will not always show you hidden files and folders by default,
Go to Start > Search and under "More advanced search options".
Make sure there is a check by "Search System Folders" and "Search hidden files and folders" and "Search system subfolders"

Next click on My Computer.
Go to Tools > Folder Options.
Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked.
Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extensions for known file types."
Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

Find and delete this file: spoolvse.exe

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder.
Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Go to Start > Run and type %temp% in the Run box.
The Temp folder will open. Click Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options.
On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files".
Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK.
Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button.
Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin.

Reboot, post a new log with the latest version of Hijack This.
Get it here: http://thespykiller.co.uk/files/hijackthis_sfx.exe

Let it extract to C:\Program Files.
Rerun it from there, post the new log.

Okay - done that, although the file spoolvse.exe could not be found (I made double sure that all the correct boxes were checked/unchecked). Apologises for forgetting the Ewido log - it is below along with the new log from HT. Thanks a lot for the help.

Just been using the pc for a bit and the cpu is still acting as though it's possessed with programs grinding to a halt. I looked on the processes list on the task manager and around 95% is "system idle processes". I've no idea what else I can do now other than go through the trauma of wiping the disk and starting for scratch, but that's not really appealing much...

System Idle Processes are not dangerous in any way, and do not actually use the computer's processor at all. Anything under the name "System Idle Porcesses" is basically unused CPU. So you're computer was only using 5% of its CPU at that time, which is fine.

Please upload this file to Jotti:
c:\windows\system32\dllcache\win32\winlogon.exe

http://virusscan.jotti.org/

Just use the Browse button at Jotti, navigate to the file's location on your hard drive and submit it.

Let me know what it says regarding the file.
