I have a Compaq Presario 5441 (475 MHz, 320 MB Ram). I just installed a Western Digital 120 GB hard drive and installed Windows 98 on it. There are no other programs in the computer. I was trying to install Windows XP Professional last night and the computer froze during a reboot on the black initial screen that has the Compaq logo. Now, every time I reboot all I get is the same screen. I even tried using the Windows 98 boot disk but again all I get is the same screen.

    What's going on? Please help!!!

compaq bios. they want you to buy their oem xp cds. if you have one of the other full system restore disks you need to use it.

the only way i have been able to install xp on a compaq directly. is install it on a differant computer with the same chipset and move the harddrive to the compaq and then activate it.

when it freezes during installation according to ms,you are to turn the computer off by the power switch and then turn it back on,and it is supposed to resume installing again.
i had it happen once and it started installing again, but i was worried it might be corrupted so i reformatted and installed it again.
is 98 on the same drive
