I need some advice; I know nothing about PC s (except how to get on hof)

I have been given a works laptop (3 year old Delll latitude, no old disks come with it), which I am giving to my daughter for schoolwork and access to the Internet. I need to update from windows 98 (SE) to the latest version of word, excel etc, but i dont know what it is or the best place to buy it

I have also just got broadband for the kids and I cannot connect, as the way pc is set it wont have it.

I am going to ask a friend to take all the old work stuff off and load some new software onto it so I will need virus guards as well as the new windows stuff.

Any ides or guidance would be very much appreciated as I am bit thick as far as PCs are concerned

Windows (98) is an operating system (OS), a different kind of software from Word & XL (commonly called applications, or apps).

Word, XL etc. can be bought separately or as part of Micro$oft Office ; the latest version of these apps/Office is 2003.

If it's for school stuff, you may qualify for a student licence, depending on what apps she needs ; see here http://www.microsoft.com/office/editions/prodinfo/students/default.mspx

Also, do the apps have to be the latest versions? MS says 2003 needs Windows 2000 to run, so you would need to upgrade. But if not, check ebay.

For an alternative to Office, check out http://www.openoffice.org/ ; will run on W98.

Repost your question about broadband (whatever that is) in "Web & Email" forum, once you've exhausted your ISP tech support.

Repost "virus guards" question in "Security" forum.

Rgds,
Andy
