Every time I try to open an office 2003 document the windows installer starts up. Very annoying.

Hi tolsen48

Welcome to Tech Support Guy Forums!

Allow the installer to finish, you may need the Office CD to complete the process.

If it will not complete, please post the exact message you are seeing.

I tried this but I get an error telling me it cannot find excel?
Excel will open if you use the shortcut, correct?

If so, you may need to use the full directory path followed by the /s safe switch.
If the path contains spaces, enclose the entire path with quotes, then add the /s switch.

For example:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\excel.exe" /s

Do a Search of your hard drive to determine the exact location of the excel.exe file.

Try copying the Office CD to a folder on the hard drive and direct the Windows Installer to that source, if it still complains the sku112.cab file is missing, copy the sku112.cab file to that directory and try it again.
