I have just recently rebuilt an old computer and decided to put XP on it. Upon installation, on the blue screen file copying stage, it keeps saying it cannot find file and prompts me to either quit, skip the file or retry.

At the end, afte I've skipped the files, it comes up with the error "Cannot read line 0 from havfile.dll - Setup cannot continue"

Any advice on what to do here would be greatly apprieciated.

That is usually a memory error . . XP is using memory at that stage of the install and if it is weak, this will happen.

You can download and run memtest to rule that out

The memory is brand new, only bought it last week.

I have also installed Windows 98 before this, but decided against it and removed it to make way for XP, but I just get these errors.

XP install stresses the memory more than Win98 . .

    Other culprits:

Dirty or scratched install disc ( or a copy of an install disc )
    Faulty CD drive
    Faulty Hard Drive
