Ok, I have this problem on two computers. One running Windows ME, and one running Windows XP. Whenever I try to start IE, using broadband, or several other programs my Windows Installer program starts to run automatically. On my Windows ME program it is trying to install Microsoft Windows 2000 Word appl. and on Microsoft XP, which is a very new computer, it is trying to run Microsoft Money 2003 installer. I already have these programs actually installed and I have no idea why every time I click on a button it tries to re-install these products. VERY Frustrating! Also, I ran HJT and wondered if anyone could tell me what is junk and I can get rid of. Thanks! BTW, my first post, great forum, glad I found it.

    Do this in order:

    1) Open Internet Explorer -> Tools -> Internet Options -> delete cookies, delete files (select off-line content), clear history. Then click ok and exit Internet Explorer.

    2) Read http://tomcoyote.org/SPYBOT/index1.html then download and run SpyBot. Make sure to get the updates for SpyBot before you have it scan your computer. After you scan and remove anything SpyBot finds, make sure to click the Immunize button and OK and then click the Immunize button in the right pane.

    3) Run one of the following free Anti-Virus programs here:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com - I found this to work the best.

    http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan

    http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan

    4) Re-post HiJackThis Log.

Ok, I did the steps in order you recommended. It did find spyware, and it did remove them. No viruses detected. I am still running into the Windows Installer problem everytime I try to log on to the internet or run certain other programs. It wants to install/re-install Microsoft Money 2003. On my other computer it wants to install Microsoft Word 2000. I just don't understand it. Here is a re-post of my HJT.

Hi sugglider, and welcome to TSG.. :)

There are a few things to clean on your log, but first of all, go to Start | Run, type msconfig, hit the Startup tab, and uncheck the msiexec.exe entry.

Then reboot. That should sort out your main problem re: the windows installer.

But could you then run another HJT! log, and check to fix the following entries, close all browser windows, and click the Fix checked button...

    Then reboot.

Please post another log, just to check over.

    Cheers

    Liam

Hi. For the past day or so, Windows Installer has been popping up every time I open a new IE window or click on anything on my desktop. Before that I was having problems with IE crashing and Win AntiVirus popups. I googled and it led me to this old TSG thread.
I tried this (after thorough virus scans) and I didn't see an msiexec entry, but I did uncheck the box to a blank row. This is what's under the Startup tab (with another Kodak thingy at the end). Maybe there's something under the 'Services' tab that I need to uncheck? I saw Windows Installer in there and something called Boonty Games. Here's what's under the Services tab: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.

I installed AVG Anti-Spyware yesterday and found an embarrasing amount of viruses (including backdoor Trojans). It seems to be clean now, but I can't be sure. Here's my HJT log:
