I'm having several problems with my computer. Windows installer box opens when ever I open a program from my desktop. I can't access any of my program from the start menu. I tried running msconfig - received message "windows cannot find msconfig".

Please don't use the report post for technical issues. The technical and security people are very busy, and they'll get to your issue as soon as possible.

Surely, you noticed this when you were typing the report, right?

When I try to search for ResetProtocolDefaults.reg I get "unexpected error - Action cannot be performed"
Additional problems that I had: I tried running the system restore from command prompt, received "system restore is unable to protect your computer - please restart and try again". I ran McAfee virus scan, Sypbot S&D - didn't find anything serious. I scanned for issues with CCleaner and found several "uninstaller reference issue" and "old start menu key" issues - looks like all of my programs. Other things I noticed - the "add/remove programs" looks strange - I can't find my recycle bin. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated!

When you click the url for the download select "Save" and save it to your desktop. Now you don't have to search for it just look on your desktop for it.

Run HJT again and put a check in the following:

    O13 - DefaultPrefix:
    O13 - WWW Prefix:
    O13 - Home Prefix:
    O13 - Mosaic Prefix:
    O13 - FTP Prefix:
    O13 - Gopher Prefix:
    O16 - DPF: {E77C0D62-882A-456F-AD8F-7C6C9569B8C7} -

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

If the installer is still coming up do this:

Download WinPFind3U.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named WinPFind3u on your desktop.

Open the WinPFind3u folder and double-click on WinPFind3U.exe to start the program.
    • In the Processes group click ALL
    • In the Win32 Services group click ALL
    • In the Driver Services group click ALL
    • In the Registry group click ALL
    • In the Files Created Within group click 60 days Make sure Non-Microsoft only is UNCHECKED
    • In the Files Modified Within group select 30 days Make sure Non-Microsoft only is UNCHECKED
    • In the File String Search group select ALL
    • in the Additional scans sections please press select ALL
    • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
    • The program will be scanning huge amounts of data so depending on your system it could take a long time to complete. Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
    • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
    • Save that notepad file but click on the "Format" menu and make sure that "word wrap" is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.
Please post the resulting log here as an attachment.

    • Click on the orange Post a Reply! button
    • scroll down to Manage Attachments
    • Click in the box that says Upload File from your Computer
    • Click the Browse... button and find the file then click open
    • Click the Upload button
    • Wait until you see Current Attachment and your file name
    • Click on Close this window
    • Then submit the reply.

Did part1 - still getting the installer.

I'm receiving an error running the WinPFind3u scan "access violation @ address 004564FF in module "WinPFind3u.exe". read of address FFFFFFFF.

Run HJT again, click on Config, Misc Tools, put checks in the boxes under Generate StartupList log and paste that log back here.

Does the installer come up in safe mode?

    Restart in Safe Mode.
    • To boot up in Safe mode, continuously tap the F8 key while starting your computer.
    • You should see a black screen displaying the Windows Advanced Menu Options.
    • Using your keyboard's arrow keys, select Safe mode, then hit Enter.

Yes it does, but it acts a little different - it opens and then closes very quickly

Go into control panel, admin tools, event viewer and find what it's trying to install. Look for errors. Double click on the errors to see the information.
