When trying to uninstall NET.Framework, to reinstall it, Windows Installer hangs. Gives message about registration, but no reference on how to do it. Windows installer works to install other updates.

You may need to provide the exact error message for research purposes. Also you can run eventvwr.msc and look for installer errors under the System or Applications logs.

For now try this: go to start > run, enter cmd and type and enter each line:

msiexec /unregister
msiexec /regserver

Rollin'rog, I'm a newcomer and don't exactly know what I'm doing. I tried the DOS CMD changes you suggested, and they seemed to apply, but nothing has changed. I tried to send you a screen copy of the installer, I can paste it in an email, but not here.

Appreciate your patience.

You don't need to do a screen shot, there is a copy icon on the properties page of the entries in the Event viewer. See attachment.

Click the copy icon to copy the error message to the clipboard, then right click on a reply window here and select "paste".

OK, I have the Event Viewer up and it shows 3000+ errors and other info since Febuary. I'm not certain which error to copy and send, should I clear the log, rerun the Installer and send you the results? OK, check next quick posts

Eddie you appear to be getting an "access denied" message. Are you logged on as Administrator when you are doing this install?

I'll have to look into it further and will be out for the afternoon myself.

As far as I know, I am the administrator. Is there a way to check?

See you later

Rog, browsing through the errors, the only time I see access denied is when I'm accessing Windows Installer. Is Windows Installer invoked for all updates and installs or are there specific ones? The other thing is that the Task Scheduler doesn't seem to be working. My updates to my McAfee AV only work on manual, they used to work automatically.

You say the Windows Installer problem ONLY happens with Net Framework? I think Net Framework must be the issue, and you haven't found or repeated the message about "registration" there. We need to get more on that.

There is a detailed procedure for resolving .Net Framework install/uninstall problems provided by Microsoft Technical support and posted by Asta toward the bottom of this thread, have a gander:

http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/WinXP/Q_21409539.html

----------------------

Go to the Control Panel > User Accounts applet. There you should see your User Name. It should say "administrator" after it.

Sometimes you can install programs from Safe Mode in XP, sometimes not. But you can't get into Safe Mode without Administrative priveleges. You might try an install there.

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406

Run services.msc and look for the Task Scheduler. If it is not set to Automatic, make it so and reboot. (double click the entry to open its properties dialog)

The Windows Installer should be set to Manual startup, not Automatic or Disabled.

Also let me see a HijackThis Scanlog:

Download and install HijackThis using the "self extractor". Run it and select "do a system scan and save the log file". Then copy/paste the contents of the log to a reply
