Windows installer continues to pop up all the time "preparing to install" and disappears, OVER AND OVER AGAIN. Can a computer dummy fix this?

    Could be a hardware problem.
Had a grandson's machine that did the same thing. Took it to a Tech shop and the mother board was cracked.
Must have been dropped, but "NOT me" said the grandson.

Using registry tools like that can cause problems like this, and always damages the registry. It would be a good idea to use System Restore to get back an undamaged registry, if you have any. Using a cleaner like that when you have problems is even worse because all they do is delete what they don't understand, so if your problem is due to something missing, the cleaners also delete all references to it in the registry, compounding the problem.

Does it disappear on its own, or can you continue with it to see what it wants?

It always disappears within 2 seconds and pops up again, like it's trying to install something that isn't there. I uninstalled a bunch of HP programs when I switched to a different brand of printer, and uninstalled skype, and that is when the fun began. CCleaner was recommended to me and that's the only reason I tried it. Pop ups are 4 times for home page, 6-8 times for youtube, weather.com "map in motion" is almost useless (constant popups). Again thnx for the time and any info will be appreciated!

Do you get time to see what it wants to install?

    Try System Restore.
    Click Start button> run >type
    msconfig
    Click Launch System restore.

Then choose a date prior to the problem.
Let us know if that helps.

    Check and post
TSG System Information Utility - found here.

It never says what it wants to install just "preparing to install" and disappears and (pops up again). Tried SYSTEM RESTORE and it said "changes to drive M after this point cannot be reversed because the drive was either excluded from system restore monitoring or was turned off or removed." I think drive M is my external hard drive that I plug in with usb, does this matter or should I plug it in before restoring? Thank you for taking the time to help an idiot!

That's a normal message when a drive has not been monitored by SR. You can still continue with a restore of the system drive. No need to plug it in unless SR won't work without it.

You can also try the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. But DO NOT clean up any programs that you still have installed. Use it only to remove remnants of programs that you already removed.

First of all thank you Elvandil and blues harp 28, just a few more questions before I dive in: Will system restore meddle with any pics I have stored in MY DOCUMENTS since the restore point? AND if I use the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility how will I know what the remnants are of the programs I removed, will they say "HP" or "Skype", will Windows Installer Cleanup Utility give me a list of uninstalled programs and remnants of these? Thanks, thanks, and thanks again. I feel more and more like an idiot everyday, thank you for taking the time to help me.

System Restore will restore the system files and the rest [documents etc] will be left untouched.

Windows Installer Clean Up, 'HP - Skype' etc may well be listed - you would highlight what you want to remove and click Remove.
Just do so with care - do not remove any needed programs.

Post a Hjt log - so we can see what is running on your system.

    Hijack this 2.04
    • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
    • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
    • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
    • Click on Install.
    • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
    • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
    • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
    • Click on Edit > Select All then click on Edit > Copy to copy the entire contents of the log.
    • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
    • DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
    • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Also post the uninstall log from Hjt log
    Start HiJackThis.
Click > Open The Misc Tools Section button.
    Click > Open Uninstall Manager.
    Click > Save List.
Save the uninstall list file on your desktop.
It will then open in Notepad.
Copy-and-Paste the uninstall list in the reply box.
