    Windows Installer hell!
So far I have not found a true solution for this one. On Windows 2000 when I try to install a program I get a message that says:

"The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed.
This can occur if you are running Windows in safe
mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly
installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance".

I read somewhere that renaming the Windows Installer damaged files and then reinstalling Windows Installer would be the solution. I tried that but the files in question could not be renamed because they are part of the Operating System. Can anybody out there help?????

You can try inserting your w2k cdrom and go to start / run / and type
    sfc /scannow

    Welcome to TSG!
If SFC Scannow does not solve the problem as Mobo suggested trying then
have a look at this MS Article for upgrading the Win 2000 Installer service.
The download is located there and also the is a reference for instructions and another link to it.
It is part of line that states...
"For complete information on installing or upgrading Windows installer......."

    Hope that helps you.

Just for giggles, check these basics:

Go to Start > Run, and type:
    regedit

    Navigate to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSIServer

In the right pane, right-click ImagePath and choose Modify.

In the value box, you should have:
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\msiexec.exe /V

Go to Start > Run, and type:

    msiexec.exe /unregister
    OK.

    Then:

    msiexec.exe /regserver
    OK.

You could also try Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services,scroll down to Windows Installer Service ,right click, select properties and set it to Automatic, then start the service.

    Xp Home OS
    HP computer 2 yrs old

Hard drive going bad (seagate 40 GB) used Disk image to copy old drive to new WD 80 GB. NOTE: You MUST use TWO separate cables to make this HD transfer. I spent 18 hrs trying to work it on master and slave per WD instruction CD (NFG).

Any way "WINDOWS INSTALLER" started poping up every time I wanted to run a windows apz. Come up and then go away and was slow. I finally found a reference to MS Money at the MS site on "events" I immediately tried to install Money 2003. It would not read the CD.

I copied the NEW Money CD to another CD. Then installed into the HP putter without any delays at all. Reboot the system and the "nag" is gone"

So you might want to look at the MS apz and reinstall one by one.

    Luck

    Tanner

PS: Running two OS's 1--WXP Home (problems)
    2---XP Pro Great no problems

I thank you guys for your suggestions.....however I'm sorry to say I tried them and still can't make it work!! I tried reinstalling Windows Installer v.2 but I keep getting a message that says that the service already exists in my computer so it won't install. It's mind boggling but I can not even uninstall or remove or do a repair installation of Windows 2000 on my PC because I keep getting the same Windows Installer error message. I have even tried the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility but it would not install because of my damaged Windows Installer!! I've browsed through other support forums before and apparently this Windows Installer issue seems to be a horror story for many others. I'll post a solution whenever I find it.
    Again, thanks guys.

You could try this: Click start/run

    Type: SFC /scannow

Note the space between SFC and /

keep your xp cd handy in case you're asked to chuck it into your cd rom

I'm wondering if there isn't a MMC or Group Policy Snap in restriction involved here.Just for the heck of it, give this a try.You have nothing to lose except any MMC or Group Policy Snap in restrictions you may have set.

    Go here:
    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

    Scroll down to #296
click on it,when the box opens, select open
    reboot

    Also try Start/Run type: gpedit.msc

navigate to Computer Configuration/Administrative Template/Windows Component/Windows Installer,on the right pane, make sure that everything is set to "Not Configured"

Do the same thing in "User Configuration"
