    Hi all,

Every time I right click on a file or shortcut, the Windows installer dialogue pops up with "preparing to install". I've spend hours cleaning off redundant files, running scans and generally cleaning up. I've reinstalled the Windows Installer, and run a repair install of XP home SP2, only to arrive at the conclusion that the installer was damaged by spyware at a point when it tried to uninstall a program which placed an entry on the right-click properties menu, and didn't uninstall it correctly. Now every time I right-click, the menu is referencing a registry value which prompts the Windows installer to start because it can't find the now-uninstalled program. Or that's my take on it.

CCleaner has tidied up the registry as much as it can, but Registry Mechanic then found 571 issues. Of course, being crippleware, it won't fix them.

I'd like to know if I can go manually go through the registry issues highlighted by Registry Mechanic and delete them without utterly destroying the system, or whether my OEM installation disk is capable of wiping the registry, i.e. a fresh install. If I go for the second option, would it be easier to wipe the HD with the Seagate "write zeroes to drive" feature, and reinstall afresh with the OEM XP CD.

Any comments or help greatly appreciated.

    Try this:

Go to Start/Run and type in:
    msiexec /unregister [click ok]

    Then Start/Run and type in:
    msiexec /regserver [click ok]

This is to "fix" the installer, if that is indeed an issue.

Hi again, I've posted the HJT log above (as I'm sure you can see!)

devil_himself: I'd already installed the utility you suggested, it seems to do what Add/remove Programs does, but I don't know which programs to uninstall. I guess I should remove them all - I've just removed MS Office 2003, cos it was giving me a some bizarre errors relating to updates, but the Windows Installer Cleanup hasn't removed shortcuts or Start menu entries. This makes me a bit unsure about its effectiveness. There are also a lot of entries which make no sense to me and I'd have to spend a while googling them and cross-reffing with the Program Files directory and the registry entries. Seems easier to wipe the disk and start from scratch, but I don't know if the OEM CD will do that.

Incidentally, Windows Update consistantly fails to update, it appears to be stuck updating the .NET Framework. Not an area I understand very well.
    Continuing thanks...!

Yes, an OEM disk will work for a clean install - if it's the disk for that PC. Did it come with it?

The OEM CD came back from the shop with the PC when I had the HD changed. It's successfully done a Repair Install, so I hope it's the right one...

If I "clear all" in the Windows Installer cleanup utility I'll have to reinstall all the software, correct? Or does it just wipe the installer's references to the installation and pick them up again automatically?

The Windows Installer CleanUp Utility does not perform the following functions:
    • Remove Windows Installer
    • Remove files of any programs that are installed by Windows Installer, such as Microsoft Office 2003
The Windows Installer CleanUp Utility does perform the following functions:
    • Provides a dialog box in which you can select one or more programs that were installed by Windows Installer

To do this, select the programs that you want in the Installed Products list in the Windows Installer CleanUp dialog box. After you make this selection, the utility removes only the Windows Installer configuration information that is related to those programs.
    • Removes the files and registry settings that make up the Windows Installer configuration information for programs that you select

    Hi again,
I went through this as suggested:
But the same Preparing to Install dialogue comes up when I right click on a file or shortcut.

The Windows Updates have been downloading fine, but it's the installation that fails.

I haven't uninstalled MS Office, only removed it from Windows Installer's list in the Cleanup Utility. Ever since I removed some spyware in July, the Installer dialogue has been coming up on rightclicks, and all the MS Office programs have been unable to open or to be uninstalled. The Windows Installer has been reinstalled twice and still doesn't work OK. Must be referring to something out of my reach.

    Any ideas?

More than likely the file associations are pointing to the windows installer for all programs. Try the following page to reset the associations if they are all associated like that
