Press the Windows key + R to open a Run box. Type in services.msc

Locate the Windows Installer service, double-click it and make sure the Startup Type is Manual, not Disabled.

I went to that link - it was not for Vista - my issue is with instaling a specific program - HTC SYNC for my phone - perhaps there is a setting I need to change?

Or is it the entire installer program..............very weird.thanks again

The fix should also work for Vista. XP's registry is very similar.

However, have you tried installing other programs lately?

What may the actual program be?

I don't know. Why don't you try installing anything, like freeware. You'll know if it's only HTC_SYCN_2.0.33 or all new programs. Or, uninstall one of your programs and try reinstalling it? We'll then know if Windows Installer is corrupt or not.

Can you give the exact error message you are receiving from Windows Installer?

I turn off my Panda antivirus, it prepares to install, and takes quite a while to do that, and then it configures the HTC driver installer, then it starts to install the HTC Synch and whammo - "Windows installer has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly and Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available (!).
