When I purchased my Win 8 laptop, I used my Microsoft Live ID as my login for my PC. Was this required and is there a way to just use a local username and disable using the Live ID?

Yes, you go to Control Panel > User Accounts > Change your account type.... and then follow the prompts.

But..... a much better solution is to keep the Microsoft Live ID login and simply create a new User Account and designate that new User Account as a Local Account. That way you have the best of both worlds.
