When I receive an e-mail with a .doc file attached, Windows Mail opens it in Works. I tried changing the "set associations" in control panel to open .doc files with Word, but when I try to do so, I get a message that "the file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action." It does! I just did it!!! It seems that Mail does not recognize .doc extensions. Any help is appreciated!

    See if this helps.

    Symptom
When you attempt to open a .DOC file that came as a mail attachment
in Windows Mail, the following error may occur: This file does not have
a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an
association in the Set Associations control panel.

This may happen even though you have Microsoft Word installed. Also,
the same file may open correctly when saved to disk and then viewed.

Do you have a fix up your sleeve for me. I'm having the exact problem with opening PPS files with power point viewer even though the settings are correct in "File association"

neary - for Vista (keep in mind that this is a different problem
and really, a new thread should have been started).

    Symptom
When you open a .PPS file that came as a mail attachment in Windows
Mail, you may see the Open / Cancel dialog box. When you select Open,
the following error may be displayed: This file does not have a program
associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the
    Set Associations control panel.

This may happen even though you have PowerPoint Viewer 2003 or 2007
installed. However, the same file may open correctly when saved to disk,
and then viewed. Note that this problem does not occur if you have
    Microsoft Office or PowerPoint installed.

Thanks for your help. Making the change in the registry did it.
None of the shops in the VA area could help.
