My son is giving me his PC with mindows ME. Id like to completely zero everything off the hard drive and test for errors. Then reinstall ME and all else. Can you tell me the steps to do this. I did this once before with help from a Gateway tech on my Windows 98 PC. I don't remember how but I know the process took a long time to completely dump everything off the drive. Then we ran a test for errors to see if we got zeros for problems. Zeros being a good thing I think. Then I reinstalled the operating system followed by updating through Microsoft Update. Step by step help would be appreciated. I'm hoping that the more recent ME computer will run better than my current 98. It can't be any worse

    First Name:
Do you have the Windows ME intallation CD and its corresponding ProductKey? You will also need a Windows 98 SE Startup Diskette as to prepare the hard drive for installaton.

If you have the above follow these steps:

Disconect all peripherals from the Computer such as, Printers, Scanners, Cameras, ....etc. only your mouse, keyboard and monitor should be conected to the computer.

Start the Computer with the Startup Diskette. At the Menu Select Command Propt with CD Support. A letter will be assigned to your CD_ROM (Usually E:). Take note of that. At the prompt type the following and press Enter:

    Format C:

Once Format is completed, all the contents of the hard drive will be wiped-out.

At the A:/ prompt type the following to move to the CD_ROM drive and press Enter after each line: (Asuming the CD_ROM drive letter is E:)

Follow instructions on Screen for installation.

Or, simply place the ME CD in the CD drive and reboot the PC.

If it is set correctly in the BIOS, the PC should boot from the ME CD and offer the install options.
