McAfee is a big memory hog. You always have the option to uninstall it and download a free anti-virus program. One that won't eat up your resources.

Padraic:

Let's get the startup list trimmed down of its unnecessary running programs. That should boost performance a little.

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG, then click OK - "Startup" tab. Remove the checkmark from

LoadPowerProfile (LoadCurrentPwrScheme)

LoadPowerProfile (LoadCurrentPwrScheme)

PCHealth (PCHSchd.exe)

SchedulingAgent (mstask.exe))

TaskMonitor (taskmon.exe)

Click Apply - OK, then reboot. When the "selective startup" window appears during reboot, ignore the message. Just place a checkmark in it, then click OK.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The processor type/speed and the amount of RAM in that computer will run Windows ME just fine. You don't really need to add more RAM. If you decide to anyway, keep the total amount down to 512 MB.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Click Start - Search - Files And Folders, select the hard drive to look in, then delete EVERYTHING that appears under

C:\TEMP\*.*

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\*.*

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open the WIN.INI file. Under the [windows] heading, there should be

load=
run=

commands. Place a semi-colon in front of both of them so they look like

;load=
;run=

DON'T delete what's after the = sign. After you're done, click File - Save - File - Exit.

Hi

Thanks for the tips lads. I'm at work at the moment but I will try out your suggestions tonight and see how I get on. I think though I will stick with McAfee, even though it hogs memory. I found it pretty reliable and I use it on my laptop also. I have noticed some of my friends have switched to AVG which has got good reviews.

Thanks for that . Another question putting a semi colon before run and load in win.ini. What does this actually do?

The semi-colon prevents Windows from reading those commands.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

EVERYTHING inside the C:\WINDOWS\TEMP folder is junk, so get rid of it. If you get a warning that a programs may not work if you delete those files, ignore the message.

Hi,
Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. Tried all that you suggested, but pc is stillslow booting up. I put the semicolon before the command in windows, this caused the pc to hang while booting up. After restaring it, it would then scan the disk for errors and boot up. I also added another 512mb of ram. I changed the vcache settings to allow windows to work with more than 512mb ram, however this still made little difference to the pc booting up. I did notice that when I looked for the sys edit that this fle was missing?

Bolow is another hijack this log

There is no such file name as SYSEDIT, which is why you couldn't find it.

When you go into Start - Run and type in SYSEDIT with Windows 98/98SE, it brings up the AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS, WIN.INI, and SYSTEM.INI files so you can view and edit them. Windows ME, however, requires you to type in the exact file name in Start - Run so you can view it.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You must've placed the semi-colon in the wrong place because it shouldn't have caused that problem. Just leave it alone, as it won't hurt anything.

Hi,

Thanks for that Flavallee, it cleared up a bit of confusion. I have ran Spybot and Ad-ware with nothing really found. System resources at startup are 82% falling to 73% when Ad-ware is running. When spybot was running system resources fell as low as 9%.

I don't see anything else in your startup list to uncheck and disable, so I'm pretty much done with you.

You can select and fix these entries:

O9 - Extra button: Net2Phone - {4B30061A-5B39-11D3-80F8-0090276F843F} - http://www.net2phone.com/ (file missing)

in your log. They're not problems. It's just a little cleanup of the log.

Hi,

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you but I was away for a few days. I carried out the fixes you recommended and I also uninstalled Mcafee Privacy Service to see if it would speed up the PC. Didn't make a whole lot of difference so I'm puzzled as to what to try next if anything. Thans for all your help Flavallee it was appreciated.
