See http://forums.techguy.org/t373950.html first.

I wiped out the boot sector in the Dell notebook D505 and installed the Windows ME operating system. The winME does not detect the CD-ROM. I posted this problem in the link specified above and I tried to solve this problem for about two weeks..

The Dell D505 uses the Intel 852/855 GM/GME chip set.
The memory controller is Intel 82852/82855 GM/GME.
The IO Controller is Intel 82801DBM (ICH4M).
The Integrated Graphics is Intel 82852/82855 GM/GME graphics controller.
The audio controller is the Sigmatel 9750.
The MODEM is the Conexant D480 MDC.

The D505 came with the Win XP Pro operating system and all the hardware worked fine. Since then I removed the Win XP Pro altogether and now only the Win ME is installed.

The device manager contains error indicators as follows:

1. Hard disk controller > Intel(R) 82801DBM Ultra ATA Storage Controller – 24CA
2. Other devices > PCI network controller
3. Other devices > PCI universal Serial Bus

I assume that the hard disk controller error inhibits the operating system from detecting the CD ROM.

How shall I make Win ME detect the CD ROM?

I am down to two error indicators. The device manager contains error indicators as follows:

1. Hard disk controller > Intel(R) 82801DBM Ultra ATA Storage Controller – 24CA
2. Other devices > PCI network controller

I assume that the hard disk controller error inhibits the operating system from detecting the CD ROM.

I activated the control panel > system > device manager > system devices > PCI bus > IRQ steering.
I exercised the following options:

1. Use IRQ steering box unchecked
The computer hangs.
Restart the computer by power cycle.
The computer does through the scan disk recovery.
Verified that the IRQ steering box is still unchecked.
Reinstall the hard disk controller driver.
No CD ROM is detected.

2. Use IRQ steering box checked with the following combinations
Get IRQ table using ACPI BIOS checked unchecked unchecked unchecked
Get IRQ table using MS spec checked checked unchecked unchecked
Get IRQ table from Protected Mode unchecked unchecked checked unchecked
Get IRQ table from Real Mode checked checked checked checked

For all combinations, no CD ROM is detected.

How shall I make Win ME detect the CD ROM?
