My husband has a problem with his Compaq Presario that I can't seem to help him fix. Every time he tries to download a Windows update or patch or an Internet Explorer update or patch, the installation hangs and then the computer freezes up. He cleaned his hard drive using Dreamboat's excellent outline, and in desperation had decided to reinstall Win ME.

The new problem: it won't accept the Product Key. Is there any way within his already installed Win ME to FIND that Product Key that was obviously entered properly when he installed it originally? We're getting REALLY desperate here!

Download and run "Belarc Advisor" it will report the KEY back along with all your system info.

Do a search on the net you'll find it.

I had a problem with the update before I had to change a setting in the internet options but it escapes me at the moment. Check your ISP troubleshooting it may have a solution. Sometimes firewalls interfere.

Happy to report that Ziggy's suggestion worked perfectly. Of course, now he's decided not to reload Win ME, but at least he could if he needed to...
