I have a copy of this in my Action Pack. Is this a stand-alone OS?

I want to do the whole media thing with my cable TV, MP3's.

Question: There is a remote control for Media Center. Shall I buy a Universal Remote or is there a certain one I need? Does it require some sort of Infrared thing or what?

Thanks in advance.

Yes and no. It's a stand alone OS, but it's basically XP Pro with extra multimedia applications and the ability to join a domain removed.

You must purchase one specially authorized by Microsoft, a universal remote will not work.

Although, there are programs, such as NovaRemote, for the pocketPC to allow it to operate as a MCE remote, but you still need a Microsoft authorized IR reciever that ships with the normal remote.
It comes with it's own IR reciever, the remote will not work with any other reciever due to microsoft's method of preventing duplicate keypresses in it's IR codes.

You also need at least one tuner card that is compatable with WinMCE to use the TV and Radio functions, I recommend the Hauppuage PVR-150MCE model. http://www.amazon.com/gp/search/104-6259048-2701522?search-alias=aps&keywords=pvr-150mce

Other things you'll need:

You'll need a MCE compatable mpeg2 codec, most DVD software encludes one. You'll need WMP10 compatable codecs for any other media you wish to play in MCE.

You'll also need a copy of SonicEncoders (shipped with retail MCE machines) in order to use the DVD burning functions through the MCE application.

Dcut (freeware), can be handy to archive older recordings, and to edit commercials out.

You may also wish to build a front panel display for your media center: http://wiki.shahine.com/default.aspx/MyWiki.HitachiFrontPanelDisplayForMediaCenter

And various other applications are available at sites like http://www.thegreenbutton.com/
