Windows Media Player Question

Hello.

I have downloaded a number of .avi video clips that seem to have spots in the film where the picture just freezes. The sound continues to play and the video runs while the screen is stuck on a certain frame. The video's all freeze on the exact same spots every time.

So far I have been starting the movie just after the corrupt spot but I was hoping there could be some way to correct the problem for good.

Any suggestions?

BTW, I am using Windows 98 and the version of Media Player from the 98 cd.

I doubt that it will help with corrupted clips, but go to Windows update and update your media player. You might find a bunch of other stuff you can update if you haven’t been there – especially critical updates. http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/default.htm

Ctrl+Alt+Del and shut down everything but Explore, Systray and IE. Try downloading the AVIs to a file on your computer with the AV inactive. Activate the AV to do a scan before you run it. I have read that running apps can corrupt downloads although I have never experienced it.

Hi,

If these are actually divx files with the avi extension, then it is quite common to get the 'frozen frames' you've described. The file just hasn't been encoded very well.

It is sometimes possible to fix the file with an 'anti-freeze' utility available from <a href="http://www.divx.com/" target="_blank"> DIVX.COM </a> but my advice is that it's usually easier just to download another copy of the file and see if it's encoded better.
