    Hi, I'm new :]
I'm trying to make a music video using Windows Movie Maker. However, I get the XP error, "Windows Movie Maker has encountered a problem and needs to close." This occurs so often that it's impossibel to accomplish anything.

Additionally, the clips I'm using for the video are in MPG format - ripped from a DVD, converted with DVD2AVI and then TMPGEnc. I've downed the bitrate as much as possible and the resolution to 240x176, but the files are still huge. Anything I can do about that?

I'd really appreciate any insight you have into these problems. Thanks so much, and have a lovely day.

    Hiya and welcome

I'll have a go at the error, but the editing of the clips others may know more about :)

    What is your video card?

Control panel | System. Device Manager. Under Display will be your card.

A few people have problems with ATI cards, so lets see if thats the problem.

Also, lets see what you have running:

Go to Run and type MSINFO32
On the left choose Software Enviroment, then Startup Programs. Copy/paste the list here.

    Regards

Wow! Someone actually replied! Thanks! I posted this on a whole bunch of message boards and no one responded, lol. I think I'm just going to use MGI Videowave instead. Thanks so much for your reply, though, I really appreciate it. It made me happy that someone actually wrote back. :)

    Hi... I'm back.
Yeah, so I thought MGI Videowave would work, but now it keeps temporarily freezing up, and I eventually get the whole "an error has occured" message. So here's the system info you asked for before, if you're still willing to help... please? I'd really appreciate it. :]

    Okay, lets have a look...

AIM: AOL Instant Messenger. If connected to the internet, automatically runs up AIM. Convenience more than anything. Available via Start -> Programs. Not needed.

America Online 8.0 Tray Icon: Puts AOL icon in System Tray (*.* denotes version if present). Connect to AOL via the desktop shortcut or Start -> Programs. Not needed.

CMESys: Part of Gator advertising spyware, see end.

GStartup: Gator spyware variant, see end.

InterVideo WinCinema Manager: WinCinema Manager is needed when using the WinDVD Remote Control for WinDVD from Intervideo. Available via Start -> Programs. Not needed.

New.net: Advertising spyware, see here for details on how to remove as disabling in MSCONFIG reportedly doesn't work. Installed as part of the Kazaa Media Desktop bundle for example

    http://cexx.org/newnet.htm

PCTVOICE: The program PCTVoice is used by the modem to interface with your computer and also used for some V.80 functions for Video Conferencing. if you uncheck it, it comes back. It’s better to leave it

winnet: CommonName Toolbar spyware. See here on removing:

    http://www.commonname.com/english/ug/toolbar/default.asp?idx=10#4

Okay, go to Control Panel | AddRemove. Look for Gator, and if present, uninstall it. If its not there, its okay.

Then, go here and download SpyBot:

    http://tomcoyote.org/SPYBOT/

After its all run, reboot, and run again, just to be sure. As for the new.net, follow the instructions in the link I gave. Try the easy version first:

    http://cexx.org/newnetfix2.htm

If you do have Kazaa, you may think about KazaaLite or WinMX, no spyware versions. If you don't have Kazaa, go to Control Panel | Internet Options. Advanced tab. Under Browsing, look for Enable Install on Demand. Untick, apply and OK.

When all those above have been cleared, go to Run and type MSCONFIG, startup tab. Uncheck the ones you don't want, apply and restart.

have you tried uninstalling, then reinstalling movie maker? Also, lets see what you have running:

Go to Run and type MSINFO32
On the left choose Software Enviroment, then Startup Programs. Copy/paste the list here.

Are you getting any error messages, or is it just freezing on you?

    Okay, lets see....

ATIModeChange: For ATI video cards. System Tray access to display mode changing? Not sure.

AtiPTA: Control panel for the ATI series of video cards allowing access to such features as display resolution, colour depth, etc. Available via Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Display. Some users may need it if they have optimised their settings. Up to you.

Cpqset: Could be Compaq NIC operating system diagnostics, not sure. leave.

ctfmon.exe: CTFMon is involved with the language/alternative input services in Office XP. CTFMON.exe will continue to put itself back into MSConfig when you run the Office XP apps as long as the Text Services and Speech applets in the Control Panel are enabled. Not required if you don't need these features.

DXM6Patch_981116: Win32 cabinet self extractor. More info here:

    http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=...ev=/groups?q=P_981116.exe&hl=en&start=10&sa=N

    Not needed.

eabconfg.cpl: Easy Access Buttons control panel on Compaq laptops. Only required if you use the extra keys.

EM_EXEC: Logitech Mouseware driver. Needed to support some additional functionality of Logitech mice/trackballs such as "SmartMove". If you disable it and find you don't need it leave it disabled.

LDM: Installed with the software for Logitech products. Automatically checks for software upgrades AND new products, services and special offerings from Logitech. Not needed.

MMTray: Musicmatch Jukebox icon in the task tray. Often supplied with HP CD-RW drives. The program works fine without it.

    MMTray2K: Not sure, maybe above???

    MMTrayLSI: As above???

NeroCheck: Associated with "Nero Burning Rom" CD writing software. Used to install/control Nero driver nerocd2k.sys. Required only if you use Win2K/XP and login without admin privileges.

Post-it® Software Notes Lite: Pop-up "yellow" notes on screen. Available via Start -> Programs. Not needed.

QuickTime: System Tray access to Apple's "Quick Time" viewer from version 5 onwards. Not needed.

Start WingMan Profiler: Logitech Wingman software required to operate Logitech joysticks and gamepads. Unless you're a hard-core gamer, it's best to leave it unchecked.

STYLEXP: StyleXP allows you customize the way WinXP looks. If disabled via msconfig it re-instates itself at reboot, therefore uninstall it if you don't want it.

SynTPEnh: Probably associated Synaptics touchpads on laptops as for SynTPEnh and SynTPLpr below but what does it do and is it required?

WhenUSave: Rebranded version of SaveNow advertising spyware, see end.

Winpopup: Intranet chat software provided by windows for chat on small networks. Handy little LAN messaging util. Has been included in Windows since 95, and maybe in WFWG 3.11. Normally it won't set itself up to run unless the user specifically adds it to startup. Not needed.

    Winsta~1.exe: GoHip foistware:

    http://accs-net.com/smallfish/gohip.htm

    see end.

WinStart001.EXE: From IGetNet - turns the IE address bar into a keyword engine piped into IGetNet. In other words, with this installed, typing "car" in the IE address bar will point the browser to the Lexus web site. Foistware - installs components without your knowledge. See end.

Okay, you have some spyware, and malware in there.

    Go here and download Spybot:

    http://www.lurkhere.com/~nicefiles/

click the online tab to search for and download the updates, then shut down and relaunch SpyBot.

Go to the Settings tab > File Sets, and uncheck 'System Internals' and 'Tracks' .
These aren't needed for our present purpose, and you can always experiment with them later on.

Finally, after closing down Internet Explorer, click 'Check for problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds 'Fix selected problems'

you may have to run spybot more than once to clear everything

    Remove everything pre-ticked in Red

Then, for the other things in the list, go to Run and type MSCONFIG, startup tab. uncheck the ones you don't want, apply and restart.

i have already done the whole bit. im not really sure if i did it properly. am i supposed to uninstall ad-aware? and when i restarted my computer a message said that i made some changes in the system and i should select normal startup in the general tab or something. im not really sure. anyway i checked the box saying dont display this again.

is it enough to fix the movie maker or do i still have to do something? thanx again for the time you've put into this question.

    Okay

You say you have AdAware: Which version? If its the newest one, get the latest updates, then run it. Spybot can work along side AdAware, but both can get the same spywares.

You were right in the ticking of the 'don't display' box. If you go back to normal startup, all that you unticked will be there again. Removing those things will speed up the pc, and could be the reason why the program was shutting.

Have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling the program again?

I had the exact error whenever I clicked on the transistions. It was driving me crazy. I was able to solve it by formating and re-installing windows. It was drastic but it had to be done. Movie maker works perfect again. I think it was caused by a third party codec that may have been installed.

MGI is a great program so long as you don't need to creat movies in NTSC (north american) format. This is because the audio and video loose sync after a while and it looks like your watching some old dubbed movie because the voice doesn't match up with the mouth moving.

Go to Start | programs, and see if there is an uninstaller in the movie maker folder.

But, just been looking around, and not sure if you can. So, say Microsoft :(

Looks like its integrated, as part of XP.

    Have you run Adaware/Spybot?
