A little more information would be helpful. How is the boot sequence set in BIOS?

1st of all is this a new computer? After you get the error message a few times does the computer finally boot to Windows?

no ive had the computer for about a year. yes it does boot up and the error messages appear as soon as it has, one after the other, when the programmes are loading up (bottom righthand side of toolbar). its the same message on each one, windows no disk. if i shut them down they dont come back and dont seem to affect the pc at all.

Here is a link to an archive with a similar problem.

    http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/415368-solved-windows-no-disk-error.html

Go to http://www.majorgeeks.com/HijackThis_d3155.html and download and install Hijack This. You need to install it in its own folder in Programs on your hard drive. After you install it run a scan with the program copy the scan to notepad then post a copy of the scan. One of the software guru's will have a look at the scan and can probably give you advice on how to correct the situation. DO NOT REMOVE ANY ITEMS UNTIL A SOFTWARE SPECIALIST LOOKS AT THE LOG.

If you open Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management, what drives are listed there (what are the letters assigned to them)?

If you put a disk in the CD or DVD drive, do you get the same error?

When did the problem begin, and had you made any prior changes or installations?

these are the drives that come up.they are boot C, backup D and recover E,disk 1 removable H, disk 2 removable I, disk 3 removable J, disk 4 removable K, cd rom 0 F, cd rom 1 G. had the problem for a few weeks now but dont think it coincided with any new install i made. do you mean if i start windows with a disk in the drive or if i put one in after it has started? if it is the later then no, the error does nor occour.

It's probably associated with the 'D' or 'E' drives.

Are these drives actually accessible? Is any backup software currently trying to reach them?

You can you experiment with reassigning the drive letters for them in the Disk Management console. The "backup" drive would be my first consideration. If you have some backup software trying to do an auto backup to one -- that would cause it. Try putting a writable disk in the "D" drive if that is a removeable media drive.

This is usually a problem with removeable media, but not always. If you don't have any media currently in one of those "drives" it will not show in the Disk Management Console.

So I would test by putting disks in the removeable media drives and reboot. If you don't get the error, or the message changes -- you know it's one of those.

You will probably also need to do some "clean boot" troubleshooting to isolate the startup which is causing it.

    Here are basic directions :

run msconfig and select the "Services" tab. Check "Hide Microsoft Services" and then disable the rest. Also uncheck "load startup group" on the general page.

See this link for detailed information:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;310353

Now restart and test the issue at hand

If no problems, run msconfig and recheck half the disabled items on the Services tab. Test again. If the problem recurs, UNcheck half the items you just checked to narrow down the culprit.

If the problem didn't occur, check the other half, so all the Services are enabled -- proceed to do this on the startup tab as well.

Get the idea? You want to isolate the problem to a specific startup if possible.

Good luck -- I know the Clean boot technique is tedious and time-consuming -- but it's also a great learning/troubleshooting drill.

Msconfig is quite safe to use, just be sure to leave the Microsoft services hidden -- there are a couple that are essential and one that can be difficult to turn back on if disabled.
