Windows Protection Errror.

My sister has an old computer running Win98. Today, upon trying to boot it up, halfway through the process pops up a black screen with "Windows Protection Error. You will have to restart the computer" on top. Anyone have any idea what happened and how I can fix this? I can boot up in Safe Mode but that's it.

Run System File Checker in Safe Mode (Start; Programs; Accessories; System Tools; System Information; Tools Menu; System File Checker.

As to the System file checker, you cannot rely on it to identify corrupt files; it will mislead you into thinking updated ones may be corrupt. Problem is more likely due to some non-windows program which has been installed, a damaged registry or faulty ram.
