    Microsoft Security Updates CD (Free)

"MS have finally announced the release of this CD which will update all version of Windows from Win98. It contains SP1 for XP as an example, as well as many more recent critical updates to about October 2003 - and it is free.

This CD is only available for Windows XP, Windows Me, Windows 2000, Windows 98, and Windows 98 Second Edition (SE).

Apparently the UK version is not available from the above url.

The UK version can be ordered from this url however you will need a NET Passport to order it.

    http://www.microsoft.com/uk/security/protect/update.mspx

According to the web page it also includes trial versions of Antivirus & firewall software for those without those applications

I recommend everybody to order it, especially if you have problems getting to update due to slower connections

My Grandma's gonna be happy! She lives "out in the sticks". Takes forever for her to keep up-to-date. Thanks for the heads up!

Just a question: is there any benefit regarding having this CD as opposed to downloading updates from the Microsoft website? I am wondering if both options have the same files, etc. Thanks.

The major benefit would be time-wise, for those on DIALUP connections---it takes hours for instance to get Internet Explorer if you have no other source handy. The CD would make a starting point, for those restoring XP too- after loading what is available on the CD, you go to Windows Update and finish up.
I had already sent for the IE 6.0 "Internet Update Kit" which is good, too. It did not have the Service Pack tho.
Getting this one will be a great help!

The updates would be the same, far as I know, the latest as of date of production I suppose.

I don't want to seem stupid But I have been very lax about downloading these updates over time I am operating with 98SE Does this CD contain all the updates for 98SE since it came out or just the most recent updates I have been unable to access the Windows update site I get an error message and have been lead to believe that I may have deleted some Spyware or Adware using either Spybot or Adaware that was needed for Windows update to function properly any informartion concerning either of these matters would be greatly appreciated

Before somebody asks for it here is the error message I have been recieving

While the Windows Update Web site is loading, you receive Initialization error 0x80070485

    Re:

You may receive error 0x80070485 when trying to access the Windows Update Site.

This is due to a missing or corrupted cabinet.dll file

    Please reinstall the Windows Installer.

For Windows 98 and Windows Me

Looks like Microsoft didn't have very many CDs made when they posted this offer ...

I ordered mine the first day, and now have a status of:

    Back Ordered

Well, this won't help any ... the links in my e-mail are all order specific, so you have to have an order ID number in order to check on the status.

Catch-22 ... don't have an ID number, can't check. Suppose it would be worth submitting another request ...
