Windows Explorer isn't running. You see no desktop/icons etc.

Boot into safe mode and post what happens.

Well I could successful boot into safe mode and use the PC within the limits of same mode, but then someone on a forum said to restore the PC to out of box state and now windows can't continue with the setup in safe mode 😪💔

Try booting into normal mode then after you hear the startup sound wait for a couple of minutes then press Ctrl+Alt+Del keys at the same time, if you get a menu click down arrow 4 times the press Enter.
You should get Task Manager now, press Alt+F then N keys, in the new window type EXPLORER and press Enter.
Do you get a desktop with icons now ?

You can use the mouse to do the above if it is working.

Hi Sam O, Does the sound you mentioned when your laptop starts sound like a faint scratching sound? If so your hard drive probably failed. This is usually the result of accidental damage caused by dropping it but not necessarily. Sometimes the hard drive can fail entirely on its own without dropping like it has with the ASUS I once had which indicated an error that read "Bad, Backup and Replace". Was the laptop dropped, bumped or did an object fall on your laptop?

That happened to me with an HP that was provided to me by the college university that I attended. I ran a hard drive diagnostics and the test passed too quickly which indicated that the hard drive failed and the IT department had to issue me a different laptop.

To run the hardware diagnostics you will need to tap F2 key repeditiely to get to your hardware diagnostics or you may need to tap a different F Key if F2 doesn't work (Depending on your manufactures F key settings), such as F10, F11 or F12. It is one of those keys that will allow you to run a hardware diagnostics check.
