Recently, everytime I start windows or switch user profiles on XP Home (SP2) a window immediately pops up saying that Windows is preparing to install something, and then it will say "Please wait while Windows configures ____." If I did not already click "cancel" several times, then it would say that the feature I am looking for is on a removable disk of some sort and ask me to insert it. After finally getting rid of the window, it pops up one more time a few seconds later for a second visit.
At first, the "_____" was Word Perfect 12, which I rarely used, and because the install messages were getting really tiring, I removed Word Perfect 12 via the Control Panel. But the next time I started my computer the message returned, but the Word Perfect 12 was replaced by "Sonic Update Manager." Other than that, though, the message was the same, and still appeared twice. In some similiar threads in this forum, some people have mentioned unchecking specific startup programs in msconfig, but those programs don't seem to be listed.
Anyway, I'd really appreciate some help.

    Hi :)

Your issue is caused by Windows Installer forgetting that it has already correctly loaded the programs mentioned upon the previous or original installation of those programs.

Not to worry, Microsoft has confirmed that is is a bug in Windows, and, therefore has provided an article on it, which describes in more tech detail what the issue is and then provides a possible solution.

I will provide some methods below to help you resolve your problem.

** If the first method works for you, then dont do the second, nor third. If however, the first does not work, then do the second, if that works, dont do the third. If the second does not resolve the issue, try method three, if that does not fix the issue, then i will provide more support **

    Method 1

Unregister Windows Installer, and then reregister Windows Installer. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. On the "Start" menu, click "Run:.

    2. In the "Open" box, type "msiexec /unreg", and then press ENTER.

    3. On the "Start" menu, click "Run".

    4. In the "Open" box, type "msiexec /regserver", and then press ENTER.

    Method 2

Upgrade to Windows Installer version 2 or newer version. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Start Microsoft Internet Explorer, and then browse to the following Microsoft Web site:

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/downloads

    2. In the left pane tree menu, click "Setup and System Administration", and then click "Setup".

    3. Click "Windows Installer", and then click the appropriate link for your operating system.

    4. Click "Download" to download and install Windows Installer version 2 or newer version.

    Method 3

Use Windows Installer CleanUp Utility to uninstall the failed product.

Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301

Download Windows Installer CleanUp Utility AFTER reading the WHOLE description document (above).

    http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/9/d/e9d80355-7ab4-45b8-80e8-983a48d5e1bd/msicuu2.exe

OK, I tried method 1 and it didn't work.

As for method 2, Microsoft says that SP2 comes with windows installer version 3.0

And I'm afraid to try method 3 because I have already deleted one of the programs Windows tries to configure, only to have it jump to a new program. I'd rather not keep deleting programs on my comp :p

Sorry, but thanks for the help!

I can log into your PC remotely and fix this for you if you wish.

Just PM me if you're interested. It should only take about 10 to 15 minutes and you don't have to install any software.

Windows Installer CleanUp utility will not uninstall programs. It is basically the only solution, along with Windows Updates which was my next suggestion. I recommend you doing this, it does work, trust me.
