Windows update fails

    It got stuck at 15%. So I rebooted into Safe Mode, tried System Restore. It failed, so I tried System Recovery Options, that failed too. Then I rebooted it regularly and it tells me that, in fact, System Restore worked. Yay!

    Now what do I do? (Besides backup my stuff.) Try to update Windows manually or do I need to do something before that? Please don't send me into the registry, I don't belong there.

    Before you back up your information make sure you have no viruses on your computer. Then backup all your information save it on a different hard drive, CD or and USB. Can you provide me with more information? like OS system and sevice pack and what updates are failing to install? Please

    I've got Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit operating system.

    Service Pack 1.

    This is what failed to install today:

    Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2753842)

    Update type: Important


    When I look back in the history, I see that other updates failed in the past year since I bought the computer, but I never noticed it because Windows has been updating automatically. Here are other updates that failed:

    I scan my computer every Saturday night with Microsoft Security Essentials, but it takes a full 24 hours to get it done, and that's if I'm around to keep pushing the mouse so the computer doesn't fall asleep. If I'm not around, it takes longer.

    That is wrong.
    Have you tried any other virus/malware scanners? I would get a copy of Avast and try that. Just temporarily disable MSE as running two together causes problems.
    One of the features of some Virii is to disable updates.

    I use the free versions of Malwarebytes and Spybot S&D, but I admit that I am not as consistent about running them as MSE.

    Download MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpyware to your desktop.
    Download the Free versions of both programs.

    MalwareBytes

    SuperAntiSpyware

    Once they are downloaded to your desktop.
    Close all open browser windows.

    MalwareBytes
    Click on the Install icon - allow it to update during the install process.
    Start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.
    Click on Scanner > then quick scan > then Scan.
    Any infections or problems will be highlighted in red.
    After the scan is finished - Click - Show Results.
    Check that all entries are selected.
    Click - Remove Selected.
    You may be prompted to restart to finish the removal process.
    If Yes - restart your Pc.

    Start Malwarebytes again.
    Click on the Logs Tab.
    Highlight the scan log entry.
    Click - Open.
    The scan log will appear in Notepad.
    Copy and paste it in your next post.

    SuperAntiSpyware
    Click on the install icon - allow it to update during the install process.
    Select the Quick Scan option.
    Click Scan your Computer.
    Any infections or problems will be highlighted in red.
    After the scan is finished.
    Click Continue.
    Check that everything is listed.
    Click Remove Threats.
    Click OK - then click Finish
    You may be prompted to restart to finish the removal process.
    If Yes - restart your Pc.

    Start SuperAntiSpyware again.
    Click View Scan Logs.
    Highlight the scan log entry.
    Click - View Selected Log.
    The scan log will appear in Notepad.
    Copy and paste in your next post.

    Right click and select "Run as Administrator"
    A command Prompt window will open.
    Let it scan the Pc - press any key when asked.

    I'm back! I think my Malwarebytes is likely corrupted, probably from running an active Spybot & Destroy with MSE at the same time, because when I looked at the Spybot log that I can no longer find, I could see it was fighting with Malwarebytes and had deleted some of it's files (it said user did it, but I surely don't remember intentionally removing any Malwarebytes files.) That may be the reason Malwarebytes hangs when I try to do full scans.

    I turned MSE back on (and I am currently giving it a full scan, but it takes forever, the computer went to sleep over night so it's only done less than 20%.) I kept Spybot off to see if it's slowing MSE down.

    So what else should I do? Try a different virus scan?

    And it brings me back to the original question. My system restored to the previous point, should I try to download Windows updates again?

    3 of your failed updates - belong to Microsoft Security Essentials.
    I would download Microsoft Security Essentials again to your desktop.
    While offline - uninstall existing version of Microsoft Security Essentials and reinstall the program again.
    If you have problem uninstalling MSE - use this tool.

    Now that you have MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpyware installed - uninstall Spybot S&D
    It used to be the best Spyware program but sadly that is no longer true.

    Download Mini Tool Box

    Download to your desktop.
    Double Click on the Mini Toolbox icon.
    Put a Tick in List Installed Programs
    Leave the Tick in Only Problems - under List Devices

    Click Go and let it scan your Pc.
    It will then open in Notepad - copy and paste the log file here.

    I'm offline for most of today - will check back when I can.

    hello again blues_harp28

    I followed your instructions and downloaded MSE to my desktop, the removal tool just in case, and the mini toolbox.

    then I deleted Spybot Search & Destroy (it said it left fragments that I would have to remove manually..if I have to go into the registry to find them, I'd just as well leave them, I do not belong in a computer's registry.)

    then, just for the goof, I scanned with MSE. it took 32 hours because I went to sleep and wasn't there to keep the computer from falling asleep.

    then I deleted MSE and reinstalled it. I did a quick scan and it found no threats. I'll be doing a full scan now just to see how long it takes and to see if it finds anything.

    after I finish doing a full scan with MSE, I will try a full scan with Malwarebytes too. if it stalls, I'll know I have to reinstall that also.

    tell me when it's time to try to update Windows. I put it on manual so it wouldn't download automatically.

    I did a full scan with reinstalled Microsoft Security Essentials and it took about 18 hours to finish, so not the kind of improvement I was hoping for.

    did you mean I should turn off MSE or Malwarebytes when I download Adobe (McAfee came with the computer, but I deleted it.) am I supposed to be turning off virus protection when I download programs? I'm wondering if that is why I've been having problems with Flashplayer ever since I got the computer. If I'm in Internet Explorer for a period of time, I get a symbol that looks like a G in a circle in different spots on a website where videos or pictures should really be. I have to close Internet Explorer and open it for things to go back to normal. Other quirky things happen in IE, which is why I recently started using Chrome.

    Hi, Microsoft Security Essentials taking 18 hours to scan! still seems a long tme.

    Do not turn off MSE or Malwarebytes when downloading programs your Pc will be unprotected and you are still online.

    On the Adobe Reader download page - it offers to install McAfee Security Scan, untick the box and refuse the download of McAfee Security Scan.

    Use this uninstall tool to remove all remaining parts of McAfee.
