Sounds like a permissions issue. Create a back up and verify permissions are set for Windows Updates in the registry. To verify permissions click Start, and then Run.
In the Open box, type regedit, and click OK. Locate, and then click the following registry key:
Edit menu, click Permissions. Verify that the Admin group and the System account are assigned full control and read permissions. If not selected, assign full control permission and read permissions. (allow and read may appear dimmed). Close the window and reboot. See if that resolves your issue.
That did not solve my problem as the above mentioned accounts already have Full Control and Read permissions.
Another piece of info: The above error occured when after connecting to the Windows Update Website, I got a button to update the Windows Update Software. After Downloading and Copying Files it started Registering and stopped at 80% and then the above mentioned error occured.
The problem has been solved now by Microsoft. But still sometimes while using Windows Update, the system asks for the correct Windows CD and says incorrect versions of the system files are present on the system even when the system is fully updated using Windows Update!
Now I'm receiving a new kind of error, i.e., on updating my system from the Windows Update Website, then I receive an error that Wndows Files are having an incorrect version and requires that original Windows CD may be inserted?
Please help!
