Okay, I took screen shots. When I started it this morning the Net Framework 3.5 & 4.8 updates failed and it gave me an option which was to update the Logitech HIDClass 1.10.79.0 driver with the comment that it might fix the problem. I did that and it didn't change anything. In the history it shows that that driver was installed successfully.

I ran the update at about 11:30 and it did the same thing, it scanned for updates, and tried to update the 3.5 & 4.8 and at the 100% install level it failed and gave me that notice. I hit the retry button and got the same fail. I attached screen shots in order

I have for you some work. If you stuck at any step, do not go to the next one. Just let me know, so I can give new instructions.

1. Uninstall and reinstall .NET Framework

1.1. Uninstall
See the picture and start UN-checking the items in the red box, one by one. Start from the first one and go on. Allow them to uninstall and let the computer make a restart when you are asked to do so. At the end of the procedure I want the first 4 boxes without a tick insight them.

1.2. Reinstall
See the picture and start checking the items in the red box, one by one. Start from the first one and go on to the next one and so on. Let the computer make a restart when you are asked to do so. This time, at the end of the procedure I want the first 4 boxes with a tick insight them.

2. Tweaking.com - Windows Repair Free Portable
  • Download Tweaking.com - Windows Repair Free Portable from here: Tweaking.com - Windows Repair Free/Pro
  • Save the zip file on your Desktop.
  • Extract the content of the file on the Desktop.
  • Open the extracted folder, find Repair_Windows.exe and double click to run the program.
  • Accept the terms of use.
  • Jump to Repairs.
  • Open Repairs > Choose to restart in Safe Mode if asked.
  • Make sure to put a tick next to these repairs: 1, 2, 3, 4, 10, 16, 20, 25, 26.
  • Start Repairs.
  • The computer may need to restart. If not, restart it.

3. Updates

Try the updates again and report back about the result.

The Tweek.com dl is a setup exe file that installs the program, not a archive. Interesting, on their website there were Restoro buttons all over the place. I scanned it with Win Security and it shows a PUS:Win32/ as does the resulting "C:\Program Files (x86)\Tweaking.com\Windows Repair (All in One)\Repair_Windows.exe" file it created. I ran that program and found the tab for repairs and there is a long list of items to check; the ones you listed are all checked. It gave a warning about having to run in Safe Mode, so I stopped.. should I restart in Safe Mode before running it?

Dr. M: Sometimes I miss things... I see that you said to follow the Safe Mode suggestion earlier in your post #62, sorry.
I ran the Tweek in safe mode. It just restarted in normal mode. I tried Win Update and am getting the same error code. Clicked the retry button and it did the same thing again. !##%$!
Maybe we just shouldn't worry about it.. how important is the 3.5 & 4.8 update? I really hate to see you spending so much time on this, but I really appreciate all your help.

Interesting, on their website there were Restoro buttons all over the place.
Can you please take a screenshot? I don't see any Restoro advertisments in the Tweaking.com site.

I scanned it with Win Security and it shows a PUS:Win32/ as does the resulting "C:\Program Files (x86)\Tweaking.com\Windows Repair (All in One)\Repair_Windows.exe" file it created.
I scan the whole folder of the portable program I told you to download and nothing found by Windows Defender. By the way, the portable program doesn't get installed. It's portable.

Maybe we just shouldn't worry about it.. how important is the 3.5 & 4.8 update? I really hate to see you spending so much time on this, but I really appreciate all your help.
The case is not if the update is important or not. The error code 0x80073712 means that some file needed by your Windows Update is either missing or corrupt. Now it's the specific update, tomorrow may be something else. So the problem has to be resolved, regardless the importance of an update.

No need to feel bad. You don't make me spend my time. It's my pleasure to help you. :)

We have a few options to try before something more drastic. Let's continue with the following:

Reset Windows Update Components

NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user. Running it on another machine may cause damage to your operating system

  • Please select the entire contents of the code box below, from the "Start::" line to "End::", including both lines. Right-click and select "Copy ". No need to paste anything to anywhere.
Code:
Start::
CreateRestorePoint:
CloseProcesses:
Startbatch:
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits

popd
net start wuauserv
net start bits
Endbatch:
CMD: bitsadmin.exe /reset /allusers
reboot:
End::
  • Please right-click on FRST64 on your Desktop, to run it as administrator. When the tool opens, click "yes" to the disclaimer.
  • Press the Fix button once and wait.
  • FRST will process fixlist.txt
  • When finished, it will produce a log fixlog.txt on your Desktop.
  • Please post the log in your next reply.
Try to update and report what happened.

I've got to pay more attention to your directions, am doing work on our house and then jumping in and out of your help posts. I screwed up yesterday, I dl'd the non portable version of Tweak, that's why it wasn't in an archive. It did show the PUP I mentioned. This morning I dl'd the portable version, and as you said the Win Security shows it to be fine. I opened the archive and ran the program again in safe mode. I just checked and the Win 3.5/4.8 update still fails.I also attached a screen shot of their website with the Restoro ad at the top. Yesterday, there were several on the site like in the box on the left with the Space movie ad .
I'll run your post 67 Frst program in a minute, just finishing breakfast. :)

Next weapon:

This will reinstall and update the operating system and fix any corruptions, without removing any file or program.
  • Go to this Microsoft page and under the title Create Windows 10 installation media press on Download tool now.
  • Save the tool on your Desktop and double click to run it.
  • On the License terms page, if you accept the license terms, select Accept.
  • On the What do you want to do page, select Upgrade this PC now, and then select Next.
  • Follow the instructions and select Keep personal files and apps, when you are asked to.
  • It might take a couple of hours, depending on your wifi speed connection, to install Windows 10. Your PC will restart a few times. Make sure you don’t turn off your PC.
  • After downloading and installing, the tool will walk you through how to set up Windows 10 on your PC.
Try to update and report what happened.

No. This won't mess anything. But if it fails, I'm afraid the next "weapon" will. Fingers crossed.
