Came across this today, thought it might be helpfull!!
" If you have a Compaq or HP desktop system and have used Windows Update to odtain WinXP SP1, you have probably seen a special update for your system. The update is actually a help file that directs you to the Compaq-HP site to obtain a patch. The patch is small , but vital that you implement it. If you do not install the patch, the next time you use WinXP System Recovery utility, you could lose all data stored on the hard drive. Follow the directions provided with the Windows Update , print out the patch instructions you encounter along the way, and have a floppy ready and you should be able to download and install the update within 15 minutes"
