Solved Windows Updates - how does it do that?

So, I check for Windows Updates and click the button that says "Check for Updates" and it comes back with "Your computer is up to date".

So I close down my computer and turn it off for the night.

I wake up in the morning and I have a Windows update ready to be downloaded and installed.

So how does this happen when my computer is shut off?

In addition to manually checking for updates as you have done, Windows 10 also checks for updates on its own on a regular basis. It is possible the Microsoft released an update while your computer was off and it checked for updates as soon as you launched Windows 10 in the morning.

You're welcome. I have had it happen with Windows 8.1 as well on my desktop at work. No notice of any updates at 5:00 PM when shutting it off and a pending update notice when I turn it on in the morning.
