Hi, my power cut off suddenly a few days ago and I haven’t been able to boot it since. When it loads up it goes straight to a screen with only 2 options,
Troubleshoot or turn off pc.
Windows repair doesn’t solve the problem and it will not let me restore or delete windows. There is also no option to reset pc.
Assuming it's a factory brand one and not a self built one, what's the brand name and model name and model number and serial/service tag number of your PC?
Was your PC running when its electrical power was cut off?
It sounds like maybe some Windows files got corrupted when the drive suddenly lost power. If you have access to another PC, you can create the Media Creation Tool and try to do a repair from that.
There is a slight chance that the drive itself has gone south. You can test the drive. The PC may have built in diagnostics.
I can access another pc but at somebody else’s house. Would it need to be connected to the same network? Ive tried to scan the drives with command prompt but it fails the check.
Do you have anything on the drive that you need ie pics, movies, data files? If so, pull the drive out and connect it to a working system. Copy whatever you need.
If you do not have anything you need on the drive, I would just clean install windows and be done with the problem. Note you need to know the exact hardware you have in the system so you can download drivers.
Before attempting an install, I would test the drive. You need to know what hard drive and who mfg the drive ie WD, Seagate, Samsung, whatever.
Would that mean just buying a windows disc from the shop and installing that way?
it’s a wd 1tb hard drive and the pc is powered by asus, I know it is 12gb ram and intel i5 processor. What other info would I need? And how would I find it without being able to access windows?
Open the case and look. Every part ie motherboard, video card, etc has either a label OR the mfg/part# is silkscreened on the part itself.
If you are running windows 10, you do not need a disk or install key. You simply create an install usb using the media creation tool Download Windows 10 (microsoft.com)
I do not think WD still has the dos or boot version of their diagnostic available. You can use the seagate dos version since it will test just about any drive. SeaTools for DOS | Seagate
How do I check the drive? Also because I don’t have boot options on load up I can only access it through bios I’m not sure how I would boot from the flash drive
Look at the motherboard. It will have a mfg and model# on the board itself. Once you post the brand, I can tell you what key to hit during POST to bring up the quick boot menu. This shows all drives [including the flash drive as long as you insert it prior to booting] You simply select the drive you want to boot.
I assume you mean you have an asus motherboard. For an asus, hit the F8 key during POST. Note any fast boot option must be disabled in the bios or you will not get a boot menu when hitting the F8 key.
thanks for that, I didn’t realise that having quick boot on meant you couldn’t access boot menu from loadup. I had previously created a flash drive but As an mbr partition scheme and target system bios, I managed to boot the flash this way but it wouldn’t install on my system it just kept freezing
Photo for reference, I have now created a fresh file on the usb and have got to this stage. It hasn’t gone past 0% in about ten minutes. I’m assuming this means an issue with the hard drive?

You really need to post ALL of your exact system specs. It is difficult to help you without knowing what we are working on. If this is a name brand system, then post the exact brand and model#
If it is a custom build, open the case and look; every part will have either a label OR have the mfg and part# silkscreened on the board/pcb.
The only test i have attempted is a chkdks on command prompt. My computer knowledge isn’t amazing so not sure how to do that. I will attach pics of bios and parts which should help. It also eventually came up with an error saying it was unable to create a partition to install
You need to answer the question; Did you use the media creation tool OR did you use something like rufus to make the flash drive?
Next, I would really test the drive with seatools dos prior however if you want to attempt an install without testing, up to you.
Boot the system with the install usb and choose repair your computer>advanced options>trouble shoot>command prompt
When at the command prompt, type "diskpart" without quotes and hit enter. Type list disk and hit enter. This shows the disks in your system. Type select disk 1 and hit enter. Sub whatever your disk shows as a number. Now type "clean" without quotes and hit enter. You should see a msg that the command completed.
Note VERY important. Have ONLY the drive on which you want to install windows connected when you do the above. This destroys ALL data on the drive.
Restart the system and do the install normally from the usb. If the drive is OK, the install should complete.
I made a file with the creation tool then put in on the usb with rufus. I followed instructions and I am currently reattempting the install. It hasn’t gone past 0% again yet will leave it till I get an error again
While rufus is fine for someone who knows what partition scheme is used, it is not fine if you are not experienced in doing installs.
Use the media creation tool to make the install usb; not rufus.
It is either a defective hard disk OR it is because rufus used the wrong partition scheme. Use the media creation tool and follow the instructions in post #20. It would be a VERY good idea to do some reading about how to clean install windows before attempting another install.
