    Please help me..
Im at my parents home for a few
more hours, at my home i have a useless
    computer.
Its a windows 98, and last night all i did
was shut down my computer. When i went to
get back on...the a drive made a funny noise.
and after 2 pages of writing that i always see before
windows starts up, at the bottom it says, something about
book disk error, insert service disk or something like that.
so i called my isp provider and they told me to go to some
one's home who has windows 98 and create a disk. so i did,
but it still wont work..it says window is starting up but then i get
this funny A:\ thing..that comes up...
My brother was going to reformat the whole thing and resinstall windows 98...but we cant figure out how to reformat starting from here...I need my computer badly, i have employment applications in everywhere...please help me someone...!!

    Use the disk you created:
Boot with the disk in the A: drive
At the A:> prompt type C:
Try a Dir from the C:> prompt to see what it can read.
You can then Format C: from there.
Sounds like you drive might have died though. If that's the case, re-installing may not help :(

    Good Luck

no, you're "Hard Drive' may me dead..if this is the case, you don't need a new computer, just a new 'Hard Drive". You can get one online or at your local computer store from about $60. Most stores will install it free if you buy from there.

Once you get to the C: prompt you should get an idea of whether the drive is shot or not from the way it behaves.

Ok, I'm going to post to let you know I'm following along, please post back after you have tried to reach a c: prompt. If you can, then try typing

    dir
    and press enter

    What happens?

Whilst you are seeing the black screen with the writing on, hold down the control key and see if you get a menu to show.

If it does the menu will show several numbered options - choose command prompt - then type :-

    scanreg /restore

note the space between the g and /

choose a registry to restore.... and good luck

But if your hard drive is dead then obviously this will not work - in fact it may not work anyway - but I think it's worth a try
