Could be a defective cable or modem or an ISP problem. Can you test another computer with your modem and cable? (Remember to power cycle the modem when switching the device connected to it.)

Or can you test the computer on another network?

My network has three other computers on it, all of which access the Internet with no problems.
The problem computer is attached to the router using a cable that is known to be good; it evinces the same problem on my neighbor's network, using a different ISP.

I picked the wrong time to pay attention to the title: "... via Ethernet cable to DSL modem."

Install SP3. Then the latest chipset (first) and networking drivers from the PC (or motherboard) manufacturer's web site.

If still not working what firewall or security suite is, or ever was, on the system?

Thank you for your advice; I really appreciate it.

When I received the computer, it had Norton Antivirus, McAffee, and one or two other such programs on it, and was using Windows Firewall. It also had just about every toolbar and gizmo in creation, and loads of adware. I did a full backup to an external drive using Norton Ghost, then uninstalled most of the above.

Yesterday I installed Windows XP SP3 (which took about 7 hours), then shut it down for the night.

This morning, upon turning it on, the computer gave out a series of beeps, and would not boot.

My next step will be to take it to the local repair shop. If they can get it running again, I will update this thread with my further adventures.

If you got an XP installation CD or a Recovery partition or Recovery disk(s) with the computer make use of them now instead of trying to repair the existing mess.

If you don't have any of the above is the a COA sticker with a readable Product Key and stating the originally installed Windows? If so, you can borrow the appropriate installation CD, or ask the shop to install that version and use your Product Key.

Of course, you first have to figure out the Computer POST and beep codes and get that problem fixed.

I replaced the motherboard, and made some progress:
    1. I flashed the BIOS with Dell's latest version, A03.
    2. Windows now has Internet access.
    3. When I open Internet Explorer, I get a message saying, "Internet Explorer has encountered an error and needs to close."
    4. When I open Opera browser, after a few minutes I get a Blue Screen crash with the error message, "PFN_LIST_CORRUPT."
    5. From the Windows Advanced Options Menu I chose "Last Known Good Configuration."
    6. Upon rebooting, after logging in to Windows, I got another Blue Screen crash with the error message, "BAD_POOL_CALLER."

Question: If the hard drive has a Recovery partition, how do I access it? It is not apparent from the Windows Advanced Options Menu.

Dell's (old ones) tend to have CDs. What is the service tag ID?

    Also what is your router?

Unfortunately, the owner of this computer was careless with his CDs, and cannot locate them.
The service tag ID is 426YV61.
There is no router in the network, just a cable modem, identified as an ARRIS Touchstone DOCSIS 3.0 Gateway. It is brand new, and all other devices on my network function flawlessly.

On the back of the Arris is a TG number. What is that?

And just for reference, this computer is a Dimension 3000

try to run in safe mode the command chkdsk /f

Are you running as NTFS or FAT32?

    ARRIS TG Number is: TG862G/NA - 8 790681
File System is described in Disk Management as follows:
Volume Layout Type File System Status Capacity Free Space
Partition Basic FAT Healthy (EISA Configuration) 31 MB 24 MB
Partition Basic FAT32 Healthy (Unknown Partition) 4.36 GB 346 MB
C: Partition Basic NTFS Healthy (System) 70.10 GB 35.08 GB

    CHKDSK /f ran to completion.
I could not tell if it found any errors because the system rebooted before I could read everything on the screen.

After rebooting I opened Internet Explorer with the same result as reported earlier:
"Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close."

This was shortly followed by the message:
"Generic Host Process for Win32 has encountered a problem and needs to close."

According to the specifications, the hard drive should be 160GB... unless this was a build to spec type dell...

Partition Basic FAT32 Healthy (Unknown Partition) 4.36 GB 346 MB -- This should be your recovery partition.

TerryNet is correct, the TG862G is the newest Docsis 3.0 Wireless eMTA. Lets wait to test network connectivity until after the full system restore outlined above.

After much trial and tribulation, I am happy to report that this computer has been running with no discernible problems for two days now.
Here is a summary of what I did:
    1. Obtained Reinstallation CD from Dell tech support.
    2. Deleted the existing system partition and did a fresh install of Windows XP Home Edition w/Service Pack 3.
    3. Manually installed device drivers from Dell website for the Intel network adapter, Intel display adapter, and SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio.
    3. Ran Windows Update repeatedly, installing about 130 updates.
    4. Installed iolo System Mechanic Pro (antivirus and antispyware).
    5. Did an image backup of the C: drive with Norton Ghost 15.0 to my Western Digital MyBook external hard drive.
I do have one follow up question:
Can anybody recommend a program that will thoroughly exercise and test every component of the system?
Thanks, again, to all of you who have contributed advice and information to this thread. I picked up a great deal of useful information here, and I really appreciate your assistance.
