    1) Got this computer I’ll call “Jan”. When I go to boot, after the first windows load-screen (the one with the black background on XP home) goes away all I get black screened.

    2) So I reboot and hit “F8”, I run to the standard procedure through “safe mode” to “last known good configuration”. No progress….

    3) Try recovery consol to see if I can find anything and redo the boot.ini…. still nothing…. So I repair system…. Still nothing but now safe mode hangs at Mup.sys…. hum…. So I slave it and get the data I need to back-up and scan for bugs, spyware, and what-not.

    4) Try to boot… Yay! I get the log on screen…. One problem…. A three year old computer wants to reactivate…. No Disk, no Code…. PHONE! Nope that didn’t work…. I know it’s a legal copy…. But I keep getting the message:

“This copy of windows must be activated with Microsoft before you can log on. Do you want to activate windows now? y/n”

    5) So I can’t activate and I’m stuck with the pop-up… the one you get if you don’t activate for 30 days…. But It was working fine for the last 3 years…

    6) So I try Safe Mode... BINGO! I can get in…. Thinking this is interesting I run more spyware scans and get 1 hit… no difference… I try to use the anti-virus program the client has… Hum, it needs to be activated too…. I’m thinking virus now, or a corrupted windows file but I did the repair….

7)Now I need help no clue what to do. I looked on the net saw a few people with the same kind of problem but not like mine. Can you guys help? No clue about the hard ware specs other then it is all working and none of them have the yellow “?” ….

    Welcome to TSG

i'm afraid you'll have to phone and talk to a microsoft representative as there is no way for us to verify your claim that the copy of windows is legitimate.
