I have Windows XP Service pack 2 installed on my system. It developed a
problem which is whenever it is staring up it shows an error message
about a file lsass.exe and once I click on the OK button of the error
message window, the system restarts. I tried re-installing the Windows
    but
the re-installation stops at a point of preparing installation with the
    error message:

    lsass.exe – System Error
An invalid parameter was passed to a service or function

When I click on the OK button, the system restarts and takes me back to
preparing installation again and the error message appears again.
Please what do I do as I do not want to format the system and lose my
data nor install a fresh copy of Windows XP as I dont want to start re-installing programs and setting up Windows to my taste all-over again.

Virus! - download the latest virus definitions, unplug your computer from the internet and run the scan.

Sounds like Sasser Virus, just like imidiot said. :)
