Hi,

I have an Acer Desktop with WIndows XP Home edition Version 2002. The CPU is 3.06Ghz with a celeron processor. The ram is 448 MB.

Here is my Hijack this log. Can you give me any idea why it runs slow? When I turn the computer and it starts to load my desktop it takes forever. When I think it's finally ready I click on internet explorer and that takes a long time.

Please review and let me know what I can do.

What model name and model number is that ACER desktop so I can find out how much RAM it supports and what type module it uses?

If it's showing 448 MB of RAM, it probably has 512 MB and has 64 MB of it reserved for use by an on-board graphics controller(512 - 64 = 448). It could use another 512 MB.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

There are too many programs loading during startup and running in the background that don't need to be doing so. That in itself is causing a performance loss and taking XP a longer time to load. I'll assist you in trimming down the startup load.

------------------------------------------------------------------

It's going to take me awhile to read your HijackThis log in its entirety and give you further instructions.

In the meantime, I want you to click the green icon at each site to download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.40 and SUPERAntiSpyware 4.28.0.1010.

Just download and save those 2 files for now. Don't install them yet or do anything with them yet.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Are you using an iPod in conjunction with iTunes and QuickTime?

Who is your Internet Service Provider?

I'm in the process of having her trim down the startup load and deal with some other things.

I disagree with having her revert back to IE7 and run CHKDSK.

I'm going to have you trim down the startup load of its more obvious unnecessary startup entries for now. We'll trim it down even more later.

Follow my instructions careful and take your time. It's not difficult to do at all.

The names in your computer may or may not have the .exe in the name, so be aware of that and don't let it confuse you.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG and then click OK - "Startup"(tab).

Remove the checkmark in

RemoteControl C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD\PDVDServ.exe

IMJPMIG8.1 C:\WINDOWS\IME\imjp8_1\IMJPMIG.EXE

MSPY2002 C:\WINDOWS\system32\IME\PINTLGNT\ImScInst.exe

PHIME2002ASync C:\WINDOWS\system32\IME\TINTLGNT\TINTSETP.EXE

PHIME2002A C:\WINDOWS\system32\IME\TINTLGNT\TINTSETP.EXE

TkBellExe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe

Picasa Media Detector C:\Program Files\Picasa2\PicasaMediaDetector.exe

QuickTime Task C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe

SunJavaUpdateSched C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe

MyWebSearch Email Plugin C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\1.bin\mwsoemon.exe

WinZip Quick Pick C:\Program Files\WinZip\WZQKPICK.EXE

Kodak EasyShare software C:\Program Files\Kodak\Kodak EasyShare software\bin\EasyShare.exe

Adobe Reader Speed Launch C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe

Microsoft Office C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

After you're done, click Apply - OK/Close - Exit Without Restart.

Click Start - Run, type in SERVICES.MSC and then click OK.

Expand the services window so you can see the list more clearly.

Highlight and double-click on

InstallDriver Table Manager (IDriverT)

Intuit Update Service (IntuitUpdateService)

Java Quick Starter (JavaQuickStarterService)

Kodak Camera Connection Software (KodakCCS)

LiveShare P2P Server 9 (RoxLiveShare9)

Viewpoint Manager Service

Yahoo! Updater (YahooAUService)

Change the setting from "Automatic"(if currently set there) to "Manual", then click Apply - OK.

You have to change the setting to one entry at a time.

After you get done, close the services window, then restart your computer.

When the small SCU window appears(see screenshot), put a checkmark in that window, then click OK.

Run a new HijackThis scan, then post that new log here.

use an ipod from time to time. Internet service provider is optimum online
There are a few iPod-related entries that we can disable from loading and running automatically, but since you use an iPod, we'll leave those entries alone and concentrate on some of the other startup entries.

Do you have a website address for optimum online? I've never heard of it. According to your log, it appears that you're using Verizon for an internet service provider. Are you using 56K dial-up or high-speed?

------------------------------------------------------------------

it's an acer SA80
Is it an Acer Aspire SA80 desktop? If it is, it supports up to 2048 MB of RAM. 512 MB modules can be purchased at this site for $19.98 plus shipping. I've used this site for years, and it's reliable. I highly suggest that you add another 512 MB of RAM to that desktop.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Have you downloaded the 2 anti-spyware programs that I previously linked you to in post #2? If you have, go ahead and install them. After they're installed, run their update function to make sure the latest definition files are installed. Advise me when you've done that so I can give you instructions for running a scan with them and fixing whatever problems they find.

www.optonline.net. Our internet service provider is through Cablevision which is our cable company.

I have downloaded the two spywares you suggested. Haven't run them yet. I run the anti Spyware about 2 weeks ago not the malware.

Let me know what I need to do with them.

Nancy:

SUPERAntiSpyware just upgraded a few days ago to version 4.28.0.1010. I noticed in your first HijackThis log that you had it installed. I just wanted to make sure that you have the current version. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware hasn't upgraded in awhile and is still version 1.40.

Close all open browser windows and any other open windows, then install them both. Restart your computer afterwards.

Start SUPERAntiSpyware and run its update function to get the latest definition files installed. After that's done, run a "quick scan" with it. When the scan completes, select and allow everything that was found to be fixed. Restart your computer if prompted to.

Go into the log section of both programs, obtain the log, then post them here.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks for posting the "Optimum Online" web site.

I'm trying to determine why you have all those "Verizon"-related in your log. If "Verizon" has no involvement in the ISP function of your computer, then we need to get rid of it. Having a bunch of unneeded and unused software in your computer just adds to the clutter and problems.

If I were to put in more Ram is that easy to do or do I have to take it somewhere? I'm not real comfortable opening computer unless there are great directions somewhere.

Here's log from Malware software. SuperANtiSpyware came up clean.

Nancy:

You pulled a "boo boo".

You run a quick scan with Malwarebytes and it found 38 problems, however you didn't select and allow them all to be fixed. Your log shows that you took no action. You would've been prompted to restart your computer to allow the fixing process to complete.

Run another quick scan, and do it right this time. And post the new scan log.

You say SUPERAntiSpyware came up clean? Not even a few adware tracking cookies?

If you're not comfortable with opening that computer case and adding more RAM, or have a family member or friend who can do it for you, a computer shop can install it for you. It'll cost you noticably more, but at least it'll get done right.
