Hi,

Friend of mine got a microsoft update for Internet Explorer 7.0. Every since, when you open anything like my computer or a document, when you close a browser window pops up with the address "about blank". It does not do this when you close internet explorer. Ran spyware checks, spydoctor and adaware and nothing showed. Virus scan was clean. I ran hijack and did not see anything in the log. Ran cwshredder and it was good.

It is a consistent little bug. Any ideas?

You asked for ideas so here's mine. If I were me, I would uninstall the IE7 update to see if this would take care of the problem. Once I had found which update was causing the problem, I would Google it to see if others were having problems with this particular update and if there is a way around it.

I had several problems with IE7 so uninstalled it and did a registry hack to keep IE7 from being automatically downloaded on my system. Will probably wait a while till the bugs are worked out and download IE7 manually.

It sounds like a scripting issue has happened. Why don't you just try uninstalling the update AND doing a System Restore. Then try the update again.

These are found in the Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > show updates.

System Restore can be accessed through Start > Run: msconfig > Launch System Restore. These can be undone if not helpful.

It would be hard to sort out on a specific basis.

Actually deinstalled IE 7.0 and it worked. All restore points had been wiped out. That was strange in itself. Still a small problem, I still think there is spyware afloat, but at least the computer is usable, running a scan thru f-secure tomorrow. Thanks for the advise.
